Phoenix Suns vs Los Angeles Clippers: 125.6 and 114.8 on defense, with Phoenix on no rest NBA

Phoenix hosts San Antonio at 9:00pm ET on Monday and the Clippers at 9:00pm ET on Tuesday 10 November. That’s 24 hours between tip-offs, at home, for a team whose defensive rating of 125.60 was the worst figure we could find in the league through Wednesday.

The Suns went into the weekend at 2-5 and 12th in the West. Thursday’s 117-104 win over Orlando ended a four-game losing streak, and it came with a lineup change, as Oso Ighodaro replaced Khaman Maluach in the first change Jordan Ott has made this season.

The Clippers are in worse shape. They’re 1-7, they’ve lost seven straight and their last win came on 21 October. Wednesday’s defeat was the most painful of the run: they led Miami 67-52 at halftime and lost 117-116 in overtime on a Klay Thompson three with one second left.

Los Angeles gets a day off after hosting New Orleans on Sunday, so it has the rest advantage here, and that’s an unusual position for a team this far down the standings. It’s 0-4 on the road, though, and it hasn’t been close to enough on defense to take advantage of a tired opponent.

This is the first meeting of the season. The teams split four games last year, each won once on the road, and all four were decided by 11 points or more.

Phoenix Suns: 30 from Booker and a seven-game homestand Phoenix Suns

Devin Booker scored 30 against Orlando and Dillon Brooks added 24, and Miles Bridges had 18 points with a season-high 13 rebounds. Phoenix made 17 of 34 threes, handed out 30 assists and got 37 points from its bench.

Those numbers were well above what this team had shown. Before Thursday the Suns had lost by 13 at home to Portland and by 7 at home to Denver, and they ranked last in the league in rebound differential at -6.80. Phoenix also went 0-6 against the spread before covering on Thursday.

The season averages are 113.9 points scored and 121.4 allowed, and that second figure is what shapes this preview. Oklahoma City scored 125 on Phoenix on 26 October, Denver 127 on 30 October and Portland 132 on Wednesday.

Booker averages 24.7 points, with Bridges at 17.3, Brooks at 16.8 and Jalen Green at 12.8. That group has produced a 2-2 home record, and Thursday’s game was the second of a seven-game homestand.

Mark Williams is out until at least February after surgery on a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Jordan Goodwin (right calf) and Rasheer Fleming (left ankle) were out through Thursday, with no firm date given for either.

Los Angeles Clippers: a 1-7 start without Ingram or Beal Los Angeles Clippers

Darius Garland had 26 points and seven assists against Miami, Rui Hachimura had 21 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists, and Brook Lopez added 20 points and 8 rebounds. Tyronn Lue’s offense can score for long stretches, as a 67-point first half showed.

Garland leads the league in turnovers per game, and one set of team numbers we saw has the Clippers last in the NBA at 19.4 a night. That hurts more against a team like Phoenix, which wants to run and shoot threes, as it did on Thursday.

Brandon Ingram and Bradley Beal hadn’t played a game as of Wednesday. Ingram is dealing with an Achilles problem and Beal with his knee, and although both carry an early-November target date on one injury list, that’s an estimate rather than a team announcement.

The rest of the rotation has held on. Garland averages 20.9 points, Hachimura 14.7, Lopez 13.5, Keaton Wagler 12.0 and Derrick Jones Jr. 11.6. Max Strus played his second game as a Clipper on Wednesday, off the bench. Hachimura and Jones were both questionable that night and both started, while Yanic Konan Niederhauser (foot) and Jordan Miller (shoulder) are out, with Miller listed until at least March.

Defensively, Los Angeles has a rating of 114.77 and allows 115.6 points. Minnesota scored 127 on the Clippers, Golden State 124 and Toronto 125 over three of the last four games, including a 47-27 fourth quarter from the Raptors on 2 November.

Probable lineup Phoenix Suns: Devin Booker, Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, Miles Bridges, Oso Ighodaro
Probable lineup Los Angeles Clippers: Darius Garland, Kris Dunn, Derrick Jones Jr., Rui Hachimura, Brook Lopez

Free NBA Prediction: Phoenix Suns vs Los Angeles Clippers

Our prediction: Over on total points (ideally a line of 229.5 or lower)

We’ve left the winner alone: Phoenix is the better team on form but it’s on a back-to-back, and the Clippers’ rest doesn’t outweigh an 0-4 road record. The clearer angle is the scoring. These teams average 223.0 points between them and allow 237.0, and Phoenix’s defense is unlikely to improve on tired legs.

The Clippers have allowed 124 or more three times in their last four games, and Phoenix has given up 125, 127 and 132 in three of its last five. The Clippers’ 19.4 turnovers a night should also give the Suns extra possessions in transition.

The risk is a slow second half from a Phoenix team on its second night in a row. Totals weren’t available at the time of writing, so we’d take the Over only at 1.45 or longer, and Beal’s and Ingram’s status is worth checking on Tuesday.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
