Oxford United vs Stockport County: the division’s top scorer at a ground where Oxford haven’t lost League One

Kyle Wootton has scored nine League One goals this season, more than any other player in the division. Stockport County bring him to the Kassam Stadium on Tuesday 27 October, kick-off 19:45 UK time, for a fixture that was first scheduled for 3 October and moved after international call-ups.

Stockport are second on 23 points from 12 games, two behind leaders Huddersfield Town, so a win would take them top for the night. Oxford are seventh with 19 points, though they’ve played two fewer matches than their visitors.

Both clubs changed manager in the summer. Jimmy McNulty replaced Dave Challinor at Stockport on 5 June, after the club had reached the League One play-off final, and Aaron Ramsey took charge at Oxford on 23 June following Matt Bloomfield’s sacking.

Oxford’s only league defeat came at Huddersfield on 1 September, 3-1. They’ve gone nine league games without losing since, with five wins and four draws, and Saturday’s 0-0 against Bradford City was the latest of them.

The recent history between the clubs belongs to Stockport, who have won the last three league meetings. Bookmakers have them at 1.90 to make it four, with Oxford at 3.40 and the draw at 3.70, and we think the goals market is where this game is priced least accurately.

Oxford United: unbeaten at the Kassam, but two goals in three games against the teams above them Oxford United

Ramsey’s side have won two and drawn three of their five home league games. They’ve scored eight goals at the Kassam and conceded four, and they’ve failed to score there only once.

The October results were tight. Oxford won 2-1 at Notts County on 10 October, drew 1-1 at Mansfield Town five days later after finishing with nine men, and beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 on 20 October with a 76th-minute winner from Kai Andrews.

Gatlin O’Donkor had three presentable chances against Bradford and didn’t take any of them. Mark Harris, the club’s leading league scorer with four, could return to the starting side along with Louie Sibley, which would move O’Donkor to the bench.

Peter Kioso and O’Donkor have both served one-match suspensions, Aidomo Emakhu is available again after a muscle injury, and Jeon Jin-woo is back in training after a back problem that kept him out from pre-season. Jamie McDonnell’s hamstring injury is expected to keep him out until the new year, and Ruben Roosken hasn’t played this season.

Across 10 league games Oxford average 1.8 goals scored and 1.0 conceded. Against the three sides they’ve faced from above them in the table, they’ve drawn twice and lost once, scoring two and conceding four.

Stockport County: four clean sheets in six league games, and a fourth match in 11 days Stockport County

Stockport haven’t lost in seven games in all competitions. The league part of that run includes a 0-0 at Sheffield Wednesday, a 1-0 win over Peterborough United, a 3-1 win over Barnsley on 10 October, 1-0 against Bromley on 17 October and 2-0 at Doncaster Rovers on 20 October, a result that briefly put them top.

Saturday brought a 1-1 draw at Notts County. Scott Robertson scored in the first half and the home side equalised in the 81st minute, the first goal Stockport had conceded in three league games.

Wootton’s nine goals account for more than a third of the 24 Stockport have scored in the league. Jack Diamond has four, Harry Wood three, and Lewis Bate has provided four assists from midfield, while the defence has let in 12 in 12.

Away from home McNulty’s side have won three, drawn two and lost one of six league games, averaging 1.7 goals scored and 0.7 conceded. Kyron Gordon is the only injury concern in the squad.

This is Stockport’s fourth game in 11 days, and McNulty has to decide how much to rotate, with Mikael Mandron and Benony Breki Andresson among the options from the bench. A back three of Jobe, O’Connell and Pye is expected in front of Whatmuff.

Probable lineup Oxford United: Cumming; Spencer, Helik, Brown, Currie; Brannagan, Andrews, Dembele, Goodrham, Sibley; Harris
Probable lineup Stockport County: Whatmuff; Jobe, O’Connell, Pye; Glover, Bate, Norwood, Osborn; Diamond, Wootton, Wood

Free Football Prediction: Oxford United vs Stockport County

Our prediction: Under 2.5 goals @ 2.20

Five of Stockport’s last six league games have finished with two goals or fewer, and the exception was the 3-1 against Barnsley. Their away average of 0.7 goals conceded per game is the lowest figure on either side of this fixture.

Oxford’s home numbers point the same way: four goals conceded in five games at the Kassam, and a goalless draw on Saturday in which their striker missed three good chances. We accept that an attack with 18 league goals in 10 games can produce more, but against the stronger sides in the division it has scored twice in three matches.

Stockport at 1.90 is a fair price for the better side, though it asks them to win at a ground where Oxford are unbeaten, in their fourth game in 11 days. A 1-1 or a one-goal away win looks the most likely outcome to us, and both stay under the line, so we’re taking Under 2.5 goals at 2.20.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
