Orlando Magic vs Atlanta Hawks: four meetings last season, four Atlanta wins by an average of 15 points
The Atlanta Hawks beat the Orlando Magic four times in 2025-26 and averaged 123 points doing it. The closest was 111-107 on 24 October 2025; the widest was 130-101 on 1 April, and in three of the four games Atlanta scored at least 124.
Wednesday’s season opener at the Kia Center, tip-off 7pm ET, still has Orlando as 2.5-point favourites. The total sits between 231.5 and 234.5 depending on the book, the Magic are around 1.74 on the moneyline and the Hawks around 2.15.
The market is leaning on Orlando’s home record and a new voice on the bench. Jamahl Mosley has been fired, and Sean Sweeney, previously an assistant in San Antonio, takes over as the 16th head coach in franchise history. His first regular-season game in charge comes against a team Orlando failed to beat in four attempts last season.
Both teams reached the playoffs last spring and both went out in the first round. Atlanta finished 46-36, took the sixth seed and led the eventual champion New York Knicks 2-1 before losing in six. Orlando won 45 games and took top-seeded Detroit to seven, losing Game 7 116-94.
We’re siding with the team that has beaten this opponent four times running. The spread is small, but the Hawks at 2.15 is the price that interests us more than Orlando at 1.74, given how one-sided last season’s four games were.
Orlando Magic: 25-15 at home last season, but 27th in three-point percentage
Home form carried Orlando last season: they went 25-15 at the Kia Center and averaged 115.7 points per game overall, and as moneyline favourites they won 34 of 51. At a price of 1.72 or shorter, the record was 27-14.
Outside shooting held them back: the Magic ranked 19th in offensive efficiency, 27th in three-point percentage and 22nd in three-point attempts, and Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner have a combined career mark of 32% from deep.
Preseason ended well, with Orlando beating Miami 136-115 as Banchero scored 24 with seven rebounds, Desmond Bane hit seven of 12 threes for 23 points and Jamal Cain added 14. The Magic scored at least 130 in each of their final two warm-up games.
Wagner’s fitness is the main team-news question after he left Friday’s preseason game with shoulder soreness. He’s listed as day-to-day, Jase Richardson is also day-to-day with a back problem, and Noah Penda is out with a hamstring injury.
Against the spread Orlando covered 37 times in 82 games and went 17-25 when favoured by 2.5 points or more, which is exactly the number they’re laying here. Their games went over the total 44 times in 82, against 40 for Atlanta, so neither side gives a strong lean on the points line.

Atlanta Hawks: fourth-fastest pace in the league and a defence that climbed from 19th to 10th
Atlanta went 22-19 on the road last season, three games over .500, and averaged 118.5 points per game. Only three teams played at a faster pace, while Orlando ranked tenth, so this should be a quick game from the opening tip. Over the two franchises’ 143 all-time meetings, Atlanta lead 78-65.
The bigger change came at the other end. Their defensive efficiency ranking rose from 19th two seasons ago to 10th, with opponents held to 116.0 points per game and 47.4% shooting from the field. On offence they posted a 55.4% effective field goal percentage, which placed them in the middle of the league.
Their preseason finale was a 135-111 win over Dallas. Nickeil Alexander-Walker made six of ten threes for 25 points, Jalen Johnson had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and Aaron Wiggins, acquired from Oklahoma City in June, came off the bench for 19 points and seven rebounds.
Injuries have thinned the frontcourt: rookie centre Henri Veesaar tore his ACL in September and is out for the season, and Mouhamed Gueye is sidelined with a foot injury. CJ McCollum re-signed on a one-year deal at the start of free agency, which keeps an experienced scorer in the backcourt alongside Alexander-Walker.
As underdogs last season, the Hawks won 17 of 39 games outright. They went 44-38 against the spread overall and 14-15 when getting 2.5 points or more, and they were 9-7 against Southeast Division opponents.

Our prediction: Atlanta Hawks to win (2.15)
Atlanta won all four meetings last season by an average of 15 points and scored 123 per game against this Orlando side. They play at the fourth-fastest pace in the league against a team that ranked 27th in three-point percentage, and Alexander-Walker’s six threes against Dallas showed where the scoring gap can open up.
The case for Orlando is the 25-15 home record and a preseason that finished with back-to-back 130-point games. Wagner’s shoulder is the complication: if he plays at less than full strength, the Magic lose one of the two forwards their offence is built around.
We’re taking the Hawks outright at 2.15 rather than the 2.5 points. A new coach, a day-to-day Wagner and a 0-4 record in this matchup last season leave the home favourite’s price too short for us, and 2.15 pays fairly for a team that won this fixture four times out of four.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
