Nice – Saint-Etienne: a return leg hanging on the edge of fear and tension
This is the ultimate pressure-cooker to close out the 2026 season. Nice host Saint-Etienne in an atmosphere that should be thick with tension at the Allianz Riviera. After the draw in the first leg, the slate has been wiped clean. Nice are fighting for their lives after a brutal slide down the table, while the visitors arrive dreaming of an instant return to the top flight after just one year in the wilderness. Ninety minutes, maybe more, of pure nerve.
Nice on the brink of a historic collapse
There is no sugar-coating Nice’s season. What was not so long ago a European side are now staring into the abyss, with relegation to Ligue 2 a humiliation they can barely afford. Claude Puel still hasn’t found the answer, and Nice come in on a miserable run of six straight matches without a win. Another defeat on Friday night would be a hammer blow for a club that has not tasted life in the second tier since the start of the century.
There is, though, a sliver of hope. Nice have been strong at home against this opponent in recent times, winning their last three meetings on their own patch, including a cup tie in December. Even so, the weight on this squad is enormous, not least after last week’s Coupe de France final loss to Lens. Puel knows his side will need to be ruthless in front of goal if they are to break down a stubborn back line. The Eagles need a response, and they need it fast. A collapse that looked impossible a few months ago is suddenly on the table. Nice are playing for survival, plain and simple.
Saint-Etienne want to seal a big comeback at the final hurdle
At the other end, Saint-Etienne travel backed by a huge green wave of support ahead of this massive away trip. Philippe Montanier has built a side with real structure, and Saint-Etienne are just 90 minutes from sealing a long-awaited return to the French elite. To get there, though, they must end a poor run on their travels, with the team having gone weeks without an away win.
The big strength of Saint-Etienne right now is the wall they’ve built at the back, underlined by three straight clean sheets. They showed plenty of composure in the last round and will lean heavily on that defensive discipline to unsettle the home side. History tells you Saint-Etienne are a club with serious pedigree, but present-day reality means this will be a scrap from start to finish. Montanier will be hoping his attack can punish every loose ball left by a nervous home defence. For the Greens, this is far too good an opening to waste. Saint-Etienne will throw everything at it.
Likely line-ups

Saint-Etienne : Larsonneur ; Pedro, Le Cardinal, Bernauer, Appiah ; Gadegbeku, Kante ; Moueffek, Davitashvili, Boakye ; Stassin

Football Prediction Nice vs Saint-Etienne
Nice to win (extra time and penalties included)
This return leg between Nice and Saint-Etienne should be tight, tense and nerve-shredding for both clubs. If the original preview feared the home side might fold under the pressure, home advantage and top-flight experience should end up tipping the balance.
Nice have a squad fired up by the fight for survival and showed plenty of spirit in their cup run. Against a Saint-Etienne side that are defensively sound but have struggled badly to create away from home lately, Puel’s men have the tools to bend the tie their way, whether in normal time, extra time or from the spot. We are backing a last-gasp escape for the Eagles.

Before anything else, a word on our predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We share an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, a tactical bust-up, a goal from nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks obvious, nothing really is. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, sooner or later, you will.
- The smart move is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live on. And above all, do not chase your losses; that rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking over your day, winds you up or puts you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist support service. That is what they are there for.
- At the end of the day, responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and never goes away, no matter how good the analysis may be.
- Important reminder: betting is forbidden for minors and must comply with the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast, with money losses, family tension and addiction. Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They have no legal force. In plain English: you cannot use them to claim anything if a bet does not land.
Information changes fast
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But line-ups change, players get injured, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly go stale. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your role
