Gignac leaves Tigres and joins Griezmann at Orlando City

Andre-Pierre Gignac’s love affair with Tigres is coming to an end. After 10 years in Mexico, more than 220 goals in 444 games and full-blown legend status in the club’s supporters’ section, the 40-year-old striker is ready to turn the page. The CONCACAF Champions League final against Toluca will be his last outing in a Tigres shirt, and he could even bow out with a second continental title to sign off in style.

The next stop is Florida. According to Multimedios and several Mexican outlets, Gignac is closing in on a move to Orlando City in MLS. The deal is said to be at an advanced stage, and it would be enough to get the club’s fans talking: APG would link up with Antoine Griezmann under the Orlando sun. A 100% French partnership, then, aimed at shaking up an MLS hierarchy still shaped by Inter Miami and a handful of other heavy hitters in North American soccer.

Gignac had offers from Ligue 1 and other MLS and Liga MX clubs, but Orlando are leading the race. At 40, the Martigues-born forward has no intention of hanging up his boots just yet. A return to Tigres in an executive role is already being discussed for later on, but for now he still has football left in him.

Orlando needs him, Griezmann is waiting

The timing of this move is no accident. After 15 MLS matchdays, Orlando City sit a disappointing 12th in the Eastern Conference. The Florida club needs a jolt, and a proven finisher like Gignac could change the mood in a hurry. Griezmann is already there, but he needed a serious partner to help build an attack with some bite.

The pair know each other well. They spent years together in the France shirt, playing in the 2018 World Cup final and Euro 2016. That bond, forged on international duty, could soon show up on the pitch in Florida. Orlando are clearly banking on the duo to kick-start a season that has been slow to get going.

For Gignac, it’s another chapter, far from Monterrey but still on the American continent he knows inside out. He could have stayed in Mexico, where his legend status opened every door. Instead, he has chosen one last sporting challenge. At 40, you can’t fault him for that.
