NRL – Cowboys vs Eels: North Queensland are building momentum

Friday Night NRL takes us to Townsville for a matchup that, on paper, looks pretty straightforward. North Queensland host an Eels side that is still going through a rough patch, both physically and as a unit.

And the longer this goes on, the clearer the gap between the two teams becomes.

The Cowboys are finally starting to look like a side that can put wins together, while Parramatta still have that air of a team one bad spell away from falling apart again.

In that context, it is hard not to see a home win coming.

The Cowboys are clearly picking up speed

Over the past few weeks, North Queensland have started to look far more settled.

What stands out is that this side no longer relies only on an individual spark or a massive Scott Drinkwater performance to create danger.

The attack is humming better, the edges are finishing moves with far more bite, and the middle is now giving them real platforms to work off.

When the Cowboys get on the front foot through the middle, they are a nightmare to handle.

Their ability to mix direct power with quick shifts wide causes major problems for poorly organised defences. And that is exactly where the Eels are right now.

At home, with confidence rising and Townsville behind them, this feels like a chance for the Cowboys to land a proper blow.

Parramatta are still falling apart defensively

For the Eels, the problem is becoming impossible to ignore.

There are still a few decent attacking passages in there. There is enough talent in this group to trouble some defences when momentum swings their way.

But defensively, they are cracking far too easily.

Worse still, this team looks like it loses all belief after two or three straight defensive sets under pressure.

Injuries are not helping, either. The rotations keep changing, the combinations are gone, and it is showing badly in big moments.

Right now, Parramatta almost have to score heavily just to stay in the contest. That is never a good sign over a long season.

The matchup heavily favours North Queensland

This looks like a very good spot for the Cowboys.

They have exactly the tools to expose the Eels’ current weak points: pace in transition, inside support, quick play-the-ball work, and the ability to turn territory into points fast.

And if the Eels start to get bullied through the middle, this one could unravel quickly.

With Drinkwater, Dearden and the outside backs growing in confidence, the Cowboys simply have too many attacking options for a defence this shaky.
