Pittsburgh Steelers cancel final training camp practice in Latrobe

NFL: Steelers break camp early as storms hit Latrobe

Lightning closes the book on camp

Pittsburgh’s 2026 training camp ended this morning without a single snap being taken. Severe weather moved across Latrobe, Pennsylvania, lightning was detected in the area, and the Steelers called off what was scheduled to be their final practice of the summer.

The timing stings more than the cancellation itself. Monday’s session was open to the public, the sort of date families in western Pennsylvania mark on the calendar weeks out. Head coach Mike McCarthy addressed that directly.

“We’re breaking camp early,” McCarthy said. “Disappointed to leave here because this is such a great environment for us to train in. Disappointing, frankly, for the fans, because those are our best practices when everybody is out there, but just based off the weather.”

Why the venue matters to Pittsburgh

Latrobe is not a neutral detail in this story. The Steelers have run their summer camp out of the town for decades, long after most of the league retreated to climate-controlled facilities next to their own stadiums. That choice is deliberate, and McCarthy’s phrasing about the environment reflects it.

The trade-off is exactly what happened Monday. A camp held on an open campus in August in western Pennsylvania is a camp exposed to August in western Pennsylvania. Storms are part of the arrangement.

Back to work Wednesday

Pittsburgh will be off Tuesday before reconvening at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Wednesday. The rest of the preseason runs indoors and on home turf, where lightning stops nothing.

One lost practice in mid-August rarely decides a season. Losing it on the day the public was invited is a different kind of cost, and one the Steelers cannot recover.
