Carolina finally puts it in writing
The paperwork landed a few hours ago. Carolina announced on Monday that Darren Waller has signed with the club, closing a deal that had been reported as agreed last week. One year, and a tight end room that suddenly looks very different.
Waller is 33. That number matters at his position, where the mileage tends to show up in the legs before it shows up in the hands. Carolina is betting it does not show up yet.
The move also cost two players their spot. The Panthers waived offensive lineman Josh Gray and outside linebacker Nick Hampton, the latter with an injury settlement.

A career that already ended once
Waller had stepped away from the game before last season. Then he came back, played nine games for Miami, and caught 24 passes for 283 yards. Six of them went for touchdowns, which is the part that would have caught Carolina’s eye. A tight end who scores at that rate on that few targets is doing something specific well.
Across 95 career games he has 374 receptions for 4,407 yards and 26 touchdowns. Meaning six of his 26 career scores arrived in a nine-game comeback stint at 32 years old, after a full year away from football.
That is the argument for the signing in one line. The argument against is the availability record behind those 95 games spread over the better part of a decade.
What it changes in Charlotte
Carolina gets a red-zone target with a real track record and no long-term commitment attached. If it works, they have found a weapon on a one-year price. If the body gives out, the contract expires anyway.
The roster cuts alongside the announcement suggest the Panthers are already thinking about the shape of the 53. Waller now has a month of camp and preseason work to prove he belongs on it.
