An agreement and a medical
Newcastle have their midfielder. According to The Athletic, the Magpies have reached an agreement with Manchester City over the transfer of Nico Gonzalez. The fee is understood to be around 55 million euros, with a further 5 million euros in add-ons.
The player has been given permission to travel to the north of England for his medical. If the final steps go through as expected, the 24-year-old Spaniard will become Matthias Jaissle’s second signing of the week. The German coach had made him his top midfield target.

A midfield to rebuild
Newcastle are not shopping for the sake of it. The club have seen Sandro Tonali head to Tottenham and Bruno Guimarães move to Arsenal. Two starters gone from the same area with just days left before the window shuts. The board wanted a player who can step in now, not a three-year project.
Nico Gonzalez fits the bill on paper. He joined Manchester City in January 2025 from Porto for 60 million euros and made 41 appearances last season. His minutes were cut sharply from January onwards, although he still kept his place in the rotation.
A move he did not want
The former Spain youth international had made it clear he wanted to stay at the Etihad Stadium. City had other ideas. The club will get back roughly the amount they paid a year and a half ago, so it is a near-break-even deal for their books.
For Newcastle, it is another outlay in an already busy summer. The Magpies are moving fast as the window ticks down, determined not to start the season short in midfield. What happens next now comes down to the medical and the paperwork.
