“It took a while”
He said it himself as he landed in London. The deal dragged on. Savinho has finally signed for Tottenham on Tuesday, arriving from Manchester City, and the Brazilian winger made no attempt to hide how long it had been in the works.
His first words of the day: “It took a while, but I am very happy to be here. It is a fantastic opportunity at a big club, with one of the best coaches in the world. As soon as I spoke to the coach, I knew I had to come. He told me he wanted to help me reach the highest level, and I am convinced we can do it together, as a team.”
The coach in question is Roberto De Zerbi. The former Marseille boss wanted this type of player.

360 million later
Tottenham are not messing around this summer. Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Marcos Senesi, Andrew Robertson, Jan Paul van Hecke, goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. And now Savinho. With this signing, Spurs have moved beyond the 360 million euro mark in summer spending.
De Zerbi set out what he expects from his new arrival. “Savio is a player who brings energy, imagination and quality out wide. He has the bravery to take on defenders and the ability to change a match with his creativity. We are delighted to welcome him, and I look forward to working with him, helping him improve and watching him bring his personality to the team.”
From Girona to London
The Brazilian made his name at Girona before moving to Manchester City. At City, the minutes never really came at the level he would have hoped for. Now he is at a club promising him a role and a coach who likes wide players willing to take risks.
That leaves the question Tottenham will have to live with all season. So much money spent, so many new faces in the dressing room, and a start to the campaign that looks anything but calm. Savinho steps into the middle of it all.
