New York Rangers vs Philadelphia Flyers: a 7-2 home record against a 1-5-1 road team NHL

Philadelphia has won one of its seven road games this season. New York has won seven of nine at Madison Square Garden, and those two records meet on Thursday 5 November, puck drop 7:00pm ET.

We’d weigh that split above the overall standings, because the Rangers’ 8-7-1 mark blends two very different teams. They’re 7-2-0 at home and 1-5-1 everywhere else, and two of those road defeats came in late October, 7-4 in Ottawa and 5-4 in Toronto.

Both teams played on Tuesday. The Rangers beat St. Louis 3-1 and ended a four-game losing streak in which they’d allowed 22 goals. Philadelphia lost 4-2 at home to Minnesota, two nights after a 6-3 win over Utah.

The Metropolitan Division has the Rangers third with 17 points and the Flyers last with 12, on a 4-9-4 record. Philadelphia’s four wins from 17 games have come with an offense scoring 2.18 goals a game on 23.4 shots, and New York is at 3.00 goals on 25.3 shots.

Special teams widen the gap. The Rangers kill 90.4% of their penalties, and they’ve given up five power-play goals all season. Philadelphia has allowed 11 and converts 16.7% of its own chances.

The market agrees with the home record: New York is priced around 1.61 and Philadelphia around 2.33. The total sits at 5.5 goals, and the Over has hit in eight of the Rangers’ last 10 home games.

New York Rangers: Garand at .905 with Shesterkin and Korpisalo both out New York Rangers

Igor Shesterkin went 3-1-0 with a 1.79 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage before his right knee put him on long-term injured reserve. Joonas Korpisalo’s foot injury keeps him out until around 9 November.

That leaves Dylan Garand with the job. He’s 5-6-1 with one shutout, a 2.57 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage, and those numbers improved on Tuesday after he allowed one goal to St. Louis. James Reimer has no decisions and a .625 save percentage in his limited work.

Adam Fox runs almost everything from the blue line. He has 19 points, 17 of them assists, the most on the team in both columns. Alexis Lafreniere leads the team with nine goals on 38 shots, and Mika Zibanejad went into this week with 12 points.

The penalty kill has been the most reliable part of this team. New York has allowed five power-play goals all season, so at least 17 of the 22 goals it gave up to Edmonton, Los Angeles, Ottawa and Toronto during the losing streak came with no man advantage.

Sean Durzi has been listed out with an undisclosed problem and carries an estimated return of this game, so his status is one to check at the morning skate. Joe Veleno is out until January and Aidan Thompson until around 13 November, which leaves the Rangers short of two centers.

Philadelphia Flyers: 2.18 goals a game and a road record that has produced one win Philadelphia Flyers

Matvei Michkov has 10 goals on 27 shots, a 37% conversion rate that we wouldn’t expect any forward to sustain. Trevor Zegras leads the team with 14 points but has four goals of his own.

The 6-3 win over Utah on 1 November showed what this roster can do when several lines score. Noah Cates, Christian Dvorak and Travis Konecny each had a goal and an assist, and the Flyers scored nine goals across their two most recent wins. Tuesday’s 4-2 loss to Minnesota came straight after it.

Before that they lost 5-4 to Anaheim, 4-3 in overtime to Columbus and 5-2 in Washington. Philadelphia allowed 14 goals during that three-game skid, and 3.35 goals against a game is the number holding this team at the bottom of the division.

Neither goalie has separated himself. Dan Vladar is 3-4-2 with a 3.21 goals-against average and an .883 save percentage, and Woll is 1-5-2 at 3.13 and .899. Vladar was the announced starter on Tuesday, so Woll could get this one.

Rasmus Ristolainen’s hand injury keeps him out until around 11 November, and Nikita Grebenkin isn’t due back until February. Michael Bunting and David Jiricek were listed as scratches for Tuesday’s game.

Our prediction: New York Rangers to win (1.61)

We’re taking the Rangers on the moneyline at 1.61. The home split carries the pick: 7-2-0 at Madison Square Garden against a team that’s 1-5-1 away.

Garand’s .905 is the honest concern, and New York has allowed four or more goals in four of its last five games. The numbers still lean heavily one way, because Philadelphia averages 2.18 goals, takes 23.4 shots and now faces a penalty kill at 90.4%.

We’d leave the puck line alone, since two of Philadelphia’s last four defeats came by a single goal. A straight New York win is the bet.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.

Before placing a bet, simply check that gambling is legal in your country. If it isn’t, that’s your responsibility, not ours.

Responsible gambling

We can’t say it enough: gamble responsibly. If you’re struggling to stay in control, don’t wait to seek help.
