Los Angeles carry their road trip into New York in good spirits. After dropping the opener of their series in Philadelphia, the Dodgers hit back immediately by taking the next two, including a convincing 9-5 win. Their ability to flip a series on its head has been one of their biggest strengths this season.

The Mets, by contrast, return to Citi Field in a very different mood. Beaten twice in Milwaukee, they are drifting further away from the qualifying spots and can hardly afford another slip. Sean Manaea against Roki Sasaki looks fairly even on paper, but these two teams are arriving with very different levels of belief.

New York Mets : searching for some consistency

The Mets often give the impression they can hang around for a few innings before falling away. Their latest series summed that up nicely: plenty of promising spells, but only one win to show for it.

The offence still leans heavily on the top of the lineup. When those hitters are kept quiet, New York struggle to put together long enough innings to really put pressure on opposing pitchers.

Sean Manaea will also have a major say. The left-hander has alternated between strong outings and tougher nights since the start of the season. Against an attack as complete as the Dodgers, the smallest loss of control can turn things quickly.

Los Angeles Dodgers : a team that always seems to find a way

The Dodgers keep moving without really hitting pause. Their roster lets them win in different ways, whether that is through the pitchers doing the job or an offence that can suddenly explode in the middle of a game.

That depth makes all the difference. Even when one starter has a quiet night, somebody else steps up. Very few teams can match that sort of offensive firepower right now.

Roki Sasaki can still be erratic in his first season, but the talent is obvious. His pace on the ball helps him out of trouble, and with a bullpen behind him, he does not need to pitch a complete game to put his side in a strong position.

The two starting pitchers are pretty close on numbers, but the rest of the matchup leans clearly towards the visitors. The Dodgers arrive on a two-game winning run, full of confidence and with an offence that can change a game at any moment.

The recent head-to-head record also points that way. Los Angeles have won six of the last ten meetings, including four of the most recent five. Beyond the results, the Dodgers have often looked better at handling the big moments once the game tightens up.

The Mets should give more of a fight in front of their own fans, but they lack the consistency to go toe-to-toe with a team this complete. If Roki Sasaki keeps them in touch through the early innings, the depth of the bullpen and the quality of the Dodgers lineup give them a strong case for another win.
