Montreal is weathering the storm

Game 3 exposed a brutal gap in puck possession. Even so, the team hung around. Lane Hutson and Mike Matheson both got on the scoresheet. Ivan Demidov picked up an assist after a slick move behind the net. The power play is still flashing. The Caufield-Hutson duo carved up Carolina’s coverage with sharp passing. Goaltender Jakob Dobes stopped 35 shots.

It is the first time Montreal has dropped two straight this spring. The kind of slide that brings back ugly memories of the 2025 elimination against Washington. Alexander Ovechkin sealed that series in overtime in Game 5. Right now, Montreal’s sluggish zone exits are killing them. Bad positioning keeps creating second chances, and Carolina is punishing them for it.

Carolina is putting on a relentless system

Territory told the story in Game 3: 38 shots to 13. Shane Gostisbehere, Taylor Hall and Andrei Svechnikov all scored. Svechnikov also played the hero in overtime. The forecheck is wrecking Montreal’s breakouts. Goaltender Frederik Andersen has stayed ice-cold despite not seeing much action.
