Minnesota Wild – Dallas Stars: who grabs the edge in this bruising clash?
The series is back on. After Dallas took Game 2, 4-2, the teams are level again as they head north. Minnesota have shown plenty, but now they have to prove they can own their ice. The Stars, meanwhile, arrive full of confidence and plenty of intent to spoil the home party.
Here is our take on a third meeting that already feels like a turning point.
Minnesota: find the touch on the power play
Even in defeat in Texas, Minnesota had enough in the performance to keep their heads up. Brock Faber gave the attack an unexpected spark, scoring twice in a surprise playoff debut. At the back, young Wallstedt keeps turning heads with strong numbers that keep Minnesota in every game.
The real problem for Minnesota is the power play, which has gone missing at the worst possible time. They went 0-for-4 in the last game and let a chance slip, especially late on. To swing the series back their way, they need to win more board battles and react quicker to loose pucks. The crowd should help drive the tempo, and that could push Minnesota into a more aggressive gear. If they tidy up those tactical details, the whole game changes. And everyone knows Minnesota can slam the door at home when the pressure starts to bite. Bottom line: they have to rediscover that killer instinct in front of net.
Dallas: depth is the real weapon
The Stars bounced straight back after their opening slip. Led by a red-hot Wyatt Johnston and the ever-calm Jake Oettinger between the pipes, Dallas showed they can lift their level when it matters. Unlike Minnesota, they made their good spells count, with Matt Duchene bringing the sort of experience that tells in the playoffs.
Their biggest strength is simple: they suffocate opponents. By shutting down Minnesota’s power play completely, they sent a clear message. Oettinger pointed to the strength of the final 40 minutes last time out, when the Stars gave almost nothing away. If they keep that structure on the road, they will be a nightmare to shift.
NHL pick Wild vs Stars
Under 6.5 total goals
This matchup has been trench hockey from the start, where every mistake gets punished. The tension only rises now that the series has shifted, and both coaches are likely to lean hard on defence rather than chase the scoreboard. Minnesota should tighten up at home.
With two goalies posting excellent save rates and special teams often cancelling each other out, a shootout looks unlikely. Expect a tight tactical scrap, with every inch of ice contested. Under 6.5 total goals feels like the smartest angle in a game this evenly matched.
First, a note on our picks
- What we publish on Mathodds is analysis, nothing more. It is an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is sport: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal out of nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no risk-free bet. Even when something looks nailed on, it really isn’t. And yes, that means you can lose. At some point, that’s unavoidable.
- The best approach is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live on. And whatever you do, don’t chase losses. That rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a bit of fun, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much of your life, if it winds you up or puts you under pressure, take a break. And if you need to, speak to a specialist support service. That’s what they’re there for.
- At the end of the day, responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis is.
- Important reminder: betting is for adults only and must follow the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast, leading to money problems, family tension and addiction. Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
