Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur: two goals in five games is the number that decides this one
Tottenham have scored two league goals all season. They bring that record to Old Trafford on Saturday 10 October, kick-off at 18:30 Paris time, to face a Manchester United side with problems of its own.
The table shows two clubs well below expectations. United are 12th on 5 points after one win, two draws and two defeats, equalling their lowest total at this stage of a Premier League season, set in 2014/15.
Tottenham are bottom with 2 points from two draws and three defeats. That matches their worst start after five games, from 2008/09, and their two goals equal their lowest tally at this point.
Both head coaches are under scrutiny. Michael Carrick took United to third place last season after arriving mid-campaign, while Roberto De Zerbi kept Spurs up on the final day and then spent heavily over the summer.
Old Trafford has been a strong venue for the hosts in this fixture. United have won 25 of their 34 home Premier League meetings with Spurs, drawing four and losing five.
The last meeting fits that pattern. United won 2-0 at Old Trafford in February 2026, which was also their most recent home clean sheet.
The longer history also favours United. Between September 2001 and March 2012 they went 22 league games unbeaten against Spurs, and overall they have won 40 of the 68 Premier League meetings.
The market makes United clear favourites at between 1.67 and 1.73. The analysis below explains why that price still holds value despite United’s own defensive issues.
Manchester United: conceding every week, but the sharper attack by distance
United’s only league win came in a 5-2 victory over Ipswich. Since then, Carrick’s side have gone three league games without a win, with two draws and one defeat.
The cup exit added pressure. United led Brighton 2-0 at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup and still lost, then needed a late Matheus Cunha equaliser to draw 1-1 at a winless Fulham.
The defensive record is poor by any standard. United have conceded in all five league games and are one of four teams yet to keep a clean sheet.
The attacking numbers tell a different story. Eight league goals in five games is four times Tottenham’s total, and the five scored against Ipswich show what this front line produces against a fragile defence.
Home form remains a strength over a longer sample. United won 13 of 19 home league games last season and have won eight of their last ten Premier League matches at Old Trafford.
The expected back four of Dalot, Maguire, Martinez and Shaw carries experience. The goals-against column shows it has not yet found consistency this season.
The fitness list is significant. Patrick Dorgu was injured on duty with Denmark, Noussair Mazraoui and Benjamin Sesko are doubts, and Ugarte is out, although Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford are expected to be involved after withdrawing from England duty.

Tottenham Hotspur: blank in four of five, and winless in three away games
Tottenham’s last Premier League win was a 1-0 against Everton on 24 May 2026. Five league games into the new season, they are still waiting for the next one.
The two points came from goalless draws at Nottingham Forest and at home to Everton. Those results show a side capable of defending in a low block, but not of hurting anyone.
The scoring problem is extreme. Spurs have failed to score in four of their five league games, and their only goals came in a 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa in which they trailed 3-0 until very late.
The away record offers no relief. Tottenham are winless in their last three Premier League away matches, and their games this season average just 2.00 goals.
Spurs have won two of their last six Premier League visits to Old Trafford, 6-1 in October 2020 and 3-0 in September 2024. This squad has shown nothing close to that cutting edge so far.
The absences hit both ends of the pitch. Pedro Porro remains out, Jan Paul van Hecke picked up an injury with the Netherlands, and Mykhaylo Mudryk, Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert are unavailable in attack.
De Zerbi’s expected 4-2-3-1 relies on Solanke as the focal point, with Marmoush and Savio wide. That group has not yet turned possession into goals.
Probable lineup Manchester United: Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Shaw; Mainoo, Tielemans; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rashford; Cunha
Probable lineup Tottenham Hotspur: Kinsky; Gray, Senesi, Van de Ven, Robertson; Bentancur, Tonali; Savio, Fernandes, Marmoush; Solanke

Our prediction: Manchester United to win
United’s defence is unreliable, but Tottenham are the side least equipped to punish it. Two goals in five games and four blanks place Spurs among the weakest attacks in the league.
United have scored eight league goals and have won eight of their last ten home league matches. A single goal could be enough, and two would almost certainly settle it.
The squad doubts on both sides cancel out, while the quality gap in the final third does not. Manchester United to win at 1.73 is our pick.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal — and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses — that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation — that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns — and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
