Liverpool vs Manchester City: a perfect record walks into a ground that keeps drawing
Five games, five wins, 15 points. Manchester City arrive at Anfield on Sunday 11 October with the only perfect record in the Premier League, and they’ve scored in 21 league matches on the bounce. Kick-off is at 17:30 Paris time.
Liverpool are unbeaten too. That’s where the comparison gets thin. Andoni Iraola’s side have drawn three of their five league games and sit sixth on nine points, already six behind the leaders.
There’s a strange backdrop to this one. City spent the international break absorbing the news that an independent commission had found them guilty of 114 of the 115 charges against them, and nobody knows yet what the punishment looks like. On the pitch? Seven straight wins in all competitions since the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal. Enzo Maresca’s side haven’t blinked.
History at Anfield tells one story. In Premier League meetings on Merseyside, Liverpool’s record reads 18 wins, eight draws and only three defeats. The recent past tells a very different one: City completed their first ever Premier League double over Liverpool last season, 3-0 at the Etihad and 2-1 at Anfield, then thrashed them 4-0 in the FA Cup in April.
Can Liverpool’s newfound defensive spine hold up against Erling Haaland? Three straight clean sheets say maybe. Four consecutive home league draws say something far less flattering.
The market can’t split them. We can.
Liverpool: three clean sheets in a row, but four straight draws at Anfield
Three clean sheets on the spin. Coming into this round, no side in the division had kept more than Liverpool’s three, and that’s the foundation Iraola has built on since taking charge. Seven matches unbeaten in all competitions, including a 3-1 win over Tottenham in the EFL Cup and a 1-0 at Bournemouth, his old club, just before the break.
The problem’s at home. Liverpool have drawn their last four Premier League games at Anfield, one short of the club record of five set between December 2002 and February 2003. This season alone, Nottingham Forest left with a 2-2 and Fulham with a 0-0. For a club with title ambitions, that doesn’t bear close inspection.
Then there’s the treatment room. Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are out, and Federico Chiesa isn’t expected to make it either. Worse, Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo are both doubts after knocks. Isak has four league goals. Gakpo has created 11 chances. Lose both, and the supply line dries up fast.
Dominik Szoboszlai has carried a lot of the creative load, with 11 chances created and five of his 13 shots on target. Florian Wirtz is a different story. Twelve shots and nine chances created look fine on paper, but his place in the side is under real scrutiny, and a game of this intensity is exactly where Iraola might lose patience.
Liverpool’s league games have averaged 2.20 goals this season. That’s a tight, controlled team. It’s also a team that hasn’t yet shown it can hurt a genuine heavyweight.
Not much of a fortress right now.

Manchester City: 21 straight league games with a goal and ten unbeaten on the road
Phil Foden won’t be at Anfield. His red card in the Manchester derby last month still has him suspended, and that’s the one confirmed absence Maresca has to plan around. Antoine Semenyo’s fitness is being monitored, but the spine of the side, from Gianluigi Donnarumma through Ruben Dias and Marc Guehi to Haaland, is expected to start.
And the numbers? Ridiculous. Thirteen goals scored, five conceded, 15 points from 15. It’s only the fourth time City have opened a Premier League campaign with five straight wins, after 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2023/24. They’ve scored in 21 consecutive league matches, eight shy of the club record of 29 set in 2018-19.
Away from home they’ve been even harder to crack. Ten Premier League road games unbeaten since 1 February 2026, six wins and four draws, including a 4-1 at Crystal Palace and a 1-0 at Old Trafford this season. The derby win is the one worth remembering: a tight away game, a lead protected, no drama.
Haaland’s five goals have come from 20 shots, half of them on target. Mathis Cherki has three goals and 12 chances created and is fast becoming the player who makes this team tick behind the striker. Semenyo, with two goals and three assists, adds a direct threat if he’s passed fit.
City’s league games have averaged 3.60 goals. They do concede, three of those five came in a wild 5-3 win over Sunderland, but they always seem to find one more at the other end. That’s a side that knows what it’s about.
The case builds.
Probable lineup Liverpool: Alisson; Araujo, Jacquet, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Barcola, Wirtz, Gakpo; Isak (Isak and Gakpo subject to fitness)
Probable lineup Manchester City: Donnarumma; Nunes, Dias, Guehi, Gvardiol; Fernandez, Anderson; Semenyo, Cherki, Ndiaye; Haaland

Our prediction: Manchester City or draw (double chance)
City have won three of the last five meetings across all competitions, including that 4-0 in April and a 2-1 at this very ground in February. They haven’t lost in ten away league games. Liverpool haven’t won at home in the league in four attempts. Put those three facts side by side and backing Liverpool outright makes uncomfortable reading.
Liverpool’s clean sheets are real and Anfield will be loud. That’s exactly why we’re not asking City to win outright. But a Liverpool side that could be without both Isak and Gakpo, facing a forward line that’s scored in 21 straight league games, needs a near-perfect afternoon to take all three points. They haven’t produced one at home all season.
The market has these two level. We don’t. City or the draw is the play, and a Haaland goal is the obvious add-on for anyone who wants to push it further.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there’s no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We can’t be held responsible for that.
