Liverpool vs Arsenal: Isak’s scoring run against the tightest defence in the top four Premier League

Alexander Isak has scored six Premier League goals in seven appearances this season, three of them in his last four matches. His latest came on 21 minutes against Brighton on Sunday, a close-range finish from Bradley Barcola’s cross, and it was the first time since January 2025, when he was still a Newcastle player, that he had scored in three league games in a row.

That 2-0 win also gave Andoni Iraola his first Premier League victory at Anfield, at the fourth attempt. His three previous league games there had produced no wins, and one of them was the 3-0 home defeat to Manchester City on 11 October, still the last time Liverpool lost in any competition.

Arsenal arrive on Sunday 1 November, kick-off 16:30 UK time, second in the table with 21 points from eight games, level on points with City at the top. Liverpool are fourth on 15. A home win would cut the gap to three points, while a defeat would leave Iraola’s side nine behind Arsenal before the November international break.

Mikel Arteta’s team have the stronger numbers. They’ve won seven of their eight league games, scored 13 goals and conceded five, and across all competitions they’ve kept seven clean sheets in 12 matches. Their one league defeat was a 3-0 loss at Brighton on 19 September.

Their week, though, has gone badly. Arsenal went out of the Carabao Cup to League Two side Fleetwood Town on Tuesday, losing 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, Max Dowman was sent off and is suspended for Anfield, and Bukayo Saka is out for several weeks with a thigh injury.

The last two league meetings produced a single goal between them: Liverpool won 1-0 at Anfield on 31 August 2025, and the game at the Emirates on 8 January finished 0-0. I don’t expect a repeat of that pattern, and the injury lists on both sides explain most of why.

Liverpool: four straight wins, but Szoboszlai is out and Wirtz didn’t finish Sunday’s game Liverpool

Since the City defeat, Liverpool have won 2-1 at Brentford, 6-3 at LASK Linz, 4-3 at home to Villarreal and 2-0 against Brighton. That’s 14 goals scored in four games and seven conceded, with both European nights far more open than Iraola would have wanted from his back line.

The Brighton game was more controlled. Florian Wirtz’s shot was deflected in off Pascal Gross on 17 minutes, Isak added the second four minutes later, and Liverpool held the lead comfortably against a side that had arrived third in the table after a 5-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Wirtz didn’t come out for the second half and is now a doubt with an ankle problem. That matters more than any other absence, because he and Cody Gakpo do most of the work linking midfield to Isak. Dominik Szoboszlai is expected to miss the game with a hamstring injury, and he was still training on his own late last week.

The right side of the defence is thin too. Jeremie Frimpong has a hamstring injury with no return date, and Victor Muñoz has been playing through a knee problem since the Brentford match; Iraola admitted he brought him back too early against Villarreal. The projected back four has Ronald Araujo covering on the right.

Liverpool host Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, three days before Arsenal visit. How many first-choice players Iraola starts in that tie will show how much he’s protecting for Sunday. Across all competitions, Liverpool have scored in ten of their 12 matches this season.

Arsenal: seven wins from eight, but no Saka or Saliba, and Rice is a doubt Arsenal

Arsenal’s season has been built on defending. Five league goals conceded in eight games is the best record among the top four, and since the defeat at Brighton they’ve beaten Leeds 2-1 at home, Nottingham Forest 1-0 away and Everton 2-0 on Saturday, when they created 1.77 expected goals to Everton’s 0.48.

Ezri Konsa scored in that Everton win, and dead balls supplied a large share of the threat, 0.79 of the expected goals coming from set-pieces. Gabriel has been the standout at the back while William Saliba has yet to play this season because of a back injury he aggravated with France at the World Cup. Saliba is back on the grass, but another scan is only due next week.

Saka’s injury is the heaviest blow. He went off early in the 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich on 21 October, fluid was found in his thigh, and Arteta has said only that “it will be weeks”. There are fears he could be out for up to eight. Christos Tzolis, injured on Nations League duty with Greece, is close to a return.

Three more starters are uncertain. Declan Rice was substituted against Everton with a problem and missed the Fleetwood game, Noni Madueke hurt his ankle in the same match and didn’t travel on Tuesday, and Riccardo Calafiori has a minor issue that Arteta called “something very small”. Rice’s absence would change Arsenal’s midfield more than any of the others.

In Europe, Arsenal beat Lille 3-0 at home on 13 October before the draw in Munich. At Fleetwood they had 19 shots and scored once, with a heavily rotated side, and Dowman’s red card means one fewer attacking option from the bench at Anfield.

Probable lineup Liverpool: Alisson; Araujo, Jacquet, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Barcola, Wirtz, Gakpo; Isak (Wirtz doubtful)
Probable lineup Arsenal: Raya; White, Gabriel, Konsa, Lewis-Skelly; Rice, Merino; Madueke, Odegaard, Eze; Gyokeres (Rice and Madueke doubtful)

Our prediction: Both teams to score – Yes

Both attacks have been reliable. Liverpool have scored in ten of their 12 matches this season and Arsenal in 11 of 12, and Isak arrives having scored in three straight league games. Liverpool have also conceded seven goals in their last four matches, so Arsenal won’t need many chances to find one.

The case against is obvious enough: the last two league meetings finished 1-0 and 0-0, and Arsenal have kept seven clean sheets in 12 games. I still back goals at both ends, because Arsenal are without Saliba and Saka and may be without Rice, while Liverpool are missing Szoboszlai and both first-choice right-backs.

A depleted Arsenal midfield is less able to protect Gabriel and Konsa for 90 minutes at Anfield, and a Liverpool defence that leaked three goals twice in Europe this month hasn’t shown it can shut out a side of Arsenal’s quality. Both teams to score is the pick.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
