Eight years at Brest
Hugo Magnetti arrived at Stade Brestois in 2018 from Bastia, back when the club was still operating well away from the spotlight. Eight years on, the 28-year-old midfielder is the second-longest serving player in the squad, behind only Brendan Chardonnet.
Since then, he has seen just about everything a club of this size can throw at him. First came the survival battles. Then came the 2023-2024 campaign, third place in Ligue 1 and Brest’s first-ever run in Europe, with Magnetti one of the key figures behind it.
According to Foot Mercato, that loyalty is about to be rewarded with a two-year extension and a hefty pay rise.

OM and Nice had a go
The backdrop gives the decision extra weight. Still according to the French outlet, Brest’s vice-captain was approached this summer by Olympique de Marseille and Nice. Two clubs chasing different targets, with different resources.
Magnetti chose to stay put. In a transfer window where mid-table regulars are often off at the first serious offer, that sends a clear message to a Brest dressing room that has changed a lot in recent seasons.
A central role in the project
He is not extending just to make up the numbers. Foot Mercato says he will hold a major role in the club’s plans, with the status of a leading figure he has built up game by game.
What Brest do with that renewed stability over what should be a long season remains to be seen. Keeping your core is one thing. Backing it properly is another, and the market shuts on September 1.
