Levante UD vs Athletic Bilbao: two resurgent sides meet at the Ciutat de Valencia 
Levante put five past Real Betis in one night, while Athletic Bilbao hit three against Atletico Madrid. Within days of each other, both clubs produced the standout result of their seasons so far.
Kick-off is set for Wednesday, 16 September at 21:30 CEST at the Estadio Ciutat de Valencia. The stadium holds 26,354.
Levante had five points after four matches, with one win, two draws and one defeat. The promoted Valencia side sat 11th in the table.
Athletic, meanwhile, had opened with two defeats and zero points, the worst start in La Liga. Since then, they have turned it around in style.
Edin Terzic has been in charge of the Basque club since 1 July 2026, after Ernesto Valverde left at the end of his deal. The German coach needed a few weeks to get his hands on the wheel.
At the other end, Luis Castro has overseen a Levante side that has bounced between very good and very shaky since August. They conceded three early on, then scored five a fortnight later.
That inconsistency is the key issue here. It explains how a promoted side can beat Betis 5-2 and then get hammered by Espanyol in the same month.
So both teams come into Wednesday asking the same question: which version turns up? The answer will go a long way to deciding the bet.
Levante UD: a 5-2 win over Betis and two away draws 
On 29 August, the Ciutat de Valencia saw Levante beat Real Betis 5-2. It was both the highest-scoring match in La Liga this season and one of the biggest home wins recorded since August.
That result wiped out the bad opening on 16 August, a 3-0 defeat away to Espanyol. In between, Levante had taken two draws from trips to Osasuna and Malaga.
After three matchdays, the balance sheet was perfectly even: five goals scored, five conceded. Few teams can boast such a neutral goal difference while swinging so wildly from one game to the next.
The promoted side’s strength is its ability to flip a game in a matter of minutes at home. The Granotes showed against Betis that they can punish a back line that loses its shape.
The weakness is obvious when the game turns against them. The 3-0 loss at the RCDE Stadium was never really in doubt. Levante still do not have the steel to fight back when things go wrong.
Luis Castro has a disciplined squad, with Levante among the two least-carded teams in La Liga at the end of August. That matters against an opponent that draws plenty of fouls.
Captain Pablo Martinez leads a defence that will need to raise its level against the Basque attack. Athletic scored three in their last statement win.
Home form remains the promoted club’s biggest weapon, with their two best performances of the season both coming at the Ciutat de Valencia. That is the main platform for Wednesday night.

Athletic Bilbao: a 3-0 win over Atletico that changes the mood 
On 5 September, Athletic Bilbao beat Atletico Madrid 3-0 at San Mames. It was Atletico’s first defeat of the season in all competitions.
Nico Williams broke the deadlock 30 seconds after the restart, Robert Navarro doubled the lead in the 48th minute. Oihan Sancet wrapped it up late on.
That win came after a disastrous opening: two straight defeats, zero points, bottom of the table by 29 August. No other La Liga club had started worse.
The opening weekend had already set the tone with a 1-3 home defeat to Sevilla. Five goals conceded in two games and only one scored – the warning lights were flashing.
Terzic has now needed a month to get the machine moving, which is hardly shocking for a coach who arrived on 1 July 2026. The 3-0 against Atletico at least backs up some of his choices.
The mood around the team is still a bit edgy, though: Athletic were among the most heavily punished sides in La Liga for red cards by the end of August, with Yuri Berchiche sent off. That kind of discipline problem can hurt badly on a tight pitch.
Inaki Williams wears the armband for a team that has found its confidence at the perfect point in the calendar. The Basques have four matches in 15 days this month.
The trip to Valencia comes three days after a home match. Rotation will matter for Terzic, who is still trying to lock down a run of form that is very new.

The last three referenced matches involving these two clubs have all produced at least three goals: Levante’s 5-2 win over Betis, Athletic’s 3-0 win over Atletico, and the Basques’ 1-3 loss to Sevilla. Both defences have shown they can be opened up.
Levante had scored as many as they had conceded after three games – five each. The promoted side does not shut games down, but it does know how to score at home.
Athletic, for their part, conceded five in their first two outings before finding a much better balance very recently. A defence that has only just settled is not exactly a rock-solid guarantee away from home.
