Football: Leon Debbouze, Jamel’s son, on trial with Angers

A familiar surname on the Angers training pitches

Football loves a family story, and here comes another. Leon Debbouze, 17, son of comedian Jamel Debbouze, is on trial with the Angers SCO U19s. Local outlet Incroyable SCO broke it.

The young holding midfielder has already had a run-out. He featured Saturday in a friendly against Laval, a game Angers went down in 1-2. One face stood out in the stands: his father, there for the occasion.

From the PSG set-up to knocking on the pro door

Leon Debbouze did not appear from nowhere. Last season he was with the PSG association U18s, a club-linked side playing in R2, one rung below the professional ranks.

Angers is a taller order. Convince the staff there and a spot at a pro club moves within reach. The pitch decides, not the name on the back of the shirt. Jamel Debbouze, a lifelong football obsessive, understands that as well as anyone. The rest is on his son.
