NFL: Eagles’ Lane Johnson says 2026 will likely be his last season

An Eagles mainstay sets a deadline

Lane Johnson has finally put it into words. The Eagles right tackle said Saturday that the 2026 season will “probably” be the last of his career. At 36, the veteran isn’t dodging the question any more.

“As you get older, things change, and so do your priorities. The kids grow up, the parents get older. It puts everything in perspective,” he told reporters. He still loves the sport, he insists. Life away from the field is just starting to weigh more.

Why say it now? “To clear my head,” Johnson replied. He had only rejoined the group on Friday after missing four practices for personal reasons.

A finish he had already seen coming

The admission did not come out of nowhere. After the 2025 season, Johnson was already toying with the idea of calling it a day. A Lisfranc injury had cost him the final seven games of the regular season, then the Eagles’ wild-card NFC exit against the 49ers.

The body sent the message. In his spot, wear and tear shows no mercy. Top-level tackles rarely last deep into their 30s. Johnson has pushed that clock back longer than almost anyone.

A career built for the record books

The numbers carry the story. The No. 4 pick in the 2013 draft, Johnson has logged 168 regular-season games and 15 playoff games in Philadelphia colours. Two Super Bowl rings. Six Pro Bowl nods. Two first-team All-Pro selections.

One more line still waits. “Play as well as I can and stay healthy,” he said. A modest wish from a player who has won just about everything, except an escape from time.
