Ligue 1: Lens will eat a 25,000-euro fine per game to keep Cahuzac

25,000 euros a match, and Lens is willing to cough up

RC Lens has an administrative headache and an expensive way around it. Yannick Cahuzac has been holding the fort since Dino Toppmoller was shown the door, but the Corsican still does not hold the BEPF, the qualification a Ligue 1 head coach is required to have.

Until the paperwork clears, every match costs the club 25,000 euros in fines.

L’Equipe reports Lens will pay it, game after game, to keep Cahuzac in the job for the long haul. The northern club has also lodged an exemption request with the National Technical Directorate and expects an answer before long.

Six games, and Toppmoller was gone

That background explains the call. Toppmoller, 45, lasted six matches on the Artois bench. It never took, least of all with some of the senior figures in the dressing room, according to reports over the past few hours.

Six games is a brutally short run, even in a league where boardrooms have stopped waiting. The German was hired this summer on what was sold as a multi-year project.

His exit left Lens with no qualified option inside the building, hence the odd financial arrangement now in place.

Cahuzac, the man already in the corridor

Cahuzac came back to RCL this summer as Toppmoller’s assistant. He is working through his BEPF, which is why the role is temporary and why the exemption request followed so quickly.

The choice says something about how Lens operates. Instead of shopping for an out-of-work name, the hierarchy backed a former player who already knows the senior men Toppmoller could not reach.

Whether the National Technical Directorate plays along is the open question. A fast exemption means the fine covers a match or two. A slow one means the bill climbs, and so does the argument at Bollaert over whether the football justifies it.
