HEBC vs Borussia Dortmund: an amateur Hamburg club up against a Ruhr giant 
Borussia Dortmund finally enter the German Cup on Tuesday at Volksparkstadion. Their run to the Super Cup final pushed back their first-round tie, which the other clubs played around ten days ago.
On the other side, HEBC are a fifth-tier side who earned their place by winning the Hamburg Cup in May. The club got permission to use Hamburger SV’s ground to host the BVB.
None of the 28 players in the Hamburg squad are paid to play football. The gap to a Bundesliga club could hardly be starker.
Philipp Obloch will lead his side in only the club’s second appearance in the competition. Their first ended in a 7-0 hammering by Eimsbutteler TV in the 1934-35 season.
Dortmund arrive in decent shape despite losing 2-1 to Bayern Munich in the Super Cup final on 22 August. The Black and Yellows bounced back on Saturday with a 2-0 win away to Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga.
The last time BVB went out in the first round of this competition was in 2005-06. The club have won it five times and reached the final on 10 occasions.
The sporting drama is limited enough, but the real question is the margin. That’s exactly where the betting angle lies.

The Hamburg club play in the fifth tier of German football. Their place in the German Cup came from a Hamburg Cup win last May.
None of the 28 players in the squad earn a salary for playing. They all have jobs alongside football.
HEBC had not played in this competition since 1934-35, when their one and only appearance ended in a 7-0 defeat to Eimsbutteler TV. Ninety-one years later, the opposition is a different class entirely.
Their recent form across the last five matches in all competitions shows two wins and three defeats. It’s patchy, but that is what you expect from an amateur group.
Philipp Obloch is likely to trust Nils Ahmann in goal, behind a back three of Bastian Stech, Janek Wrede and Julius Stegemann. A deep block looks the only sensible route against a Bundesliga attack.
A three-man midfield is also expected to clog the middle, with Laurel Aug, Semir Demirovic and Piet Oldag in the frame. The priority will be to cut passing lanes rather than carry the ball.
Playing at Hamburger SV’s stadium gives these players a special stage. But the atmosphere won’t make up for the gap in athleticism and technique over 90 minutes.
The Hamburg squad has 28 players, a big enough group but still fully amateur. Managing energy across 90 minutes will be Philipp Obloch’s real test.

Borussia Dortmund arrive with a heavily changed squad 
Dortmund opened their Bundesliga season with a 2-0 win away to Hamburger SV. That result put them fifth after matchday one, level on points with the four teams above them.
The 2-1 Super Cup final defeat to Bayern Munich on 22 August remains their only setback so far. A win on Tuesday would make it three victories from their last four competitive games.
Niko Kovac has not gone beyond the last 16 of the German Cup since 2023-24. All three of those exits came against top-flight clubs, which is not the case on Tuesday.
Dortmund have not played away from Signal Iduna Park this season apart from the trip to Hamburg. Their away record at the end of 2025-26 stood at three wins, three defeats and a draw.
The staff are set to make plenty of changes to the starting line-up. Enzo Duarte is among the youngsters expected in midfield for this first-round tie.
Giannis Konstantelias, who arrived at Dortmund this summer, will miss a long spell after ligament damage suffered against Hamburger SV was confirmed. His injury opens the door for Konstantinos Karetsas in attack.
Mathis Albert and Fabio Silva are expected to join Karetsas in the front line. Joey Veerman, another summer signing, should feature in midfield.
Dortmund have won the German Cup five times and played in the final 10 times in their history. That record puts them among the competition’s regular late-round players.

Dortmund just won 2-0 at a Bundesliga club and have not fallen at the first hurdle in the German Cup since 2005-06. Even with a rotated XI built around Fabio Silva, Konstantinos Karetsas and Mathis Albert, BVB’s depth is in a different world from HEBC’s.
