Hamburger SV vs Eintracht Frankfurt: Hamburg’s home form against a defence that’s let in 17
Hamburger SV won 2-1 in Frankfurt on 2 May. Five months earlier, in December 2025, the sides drew 1-1 at the Volksparkstadion, so Frankfurt haven’t beaten Hamburg in either of the last two meetings.
They meet again on Tuesday 27 October in the second round of the DFB-Pokal, kick-off 17:00 UK time. It’s 90 minutes, then extra time and penalties if needed, and the bookmakers make Frankfurt the favourites at 2.20, with Hamburg at 2.80 and the draw at 3.50.
I’d question that order. Frankfurt are 13th in the Bundesliga with eight points from seven games, and they’ve conceded 17 league goals, more than anyone in the top flight apart from Union Berlin and Borussia Monchengladbach.
Six of those 17 came in one afternoon, a 6-0 defeat at RB Leipzig on 10 October. Frankfurt then beat Koln 1-0 at home and lost 1-0 at Dortmund on Saturday, when Maximilian Beier scored ten minutes from time.
Hamburg are tenth on nine points. Merlin Polzin’s side lost their first three league games, won the next three, and were beaten 1-0 at Paderborn on Saturday.
The goals market reflects how open the bookmakers expect it to be: over 2.5 is 1.50 and both teams to score is 1.41. Both clubs played on Saturday, so neither has an edge on rest. The difference is where they play, and Hamburg’s results at the Volksparkstadion since mid-September are the strongest part of their season.
Hamburger SV: three home wins on the bounce, but six league goals all season
Hamburg’s last three home games ended 2-1 against Koln on 19 September, 2-0 against FC Copenhagen on 4 October and 1-0 against Stuttgart on 17 October. In between they won 3-2 at Hoffenheim.
The weakness is at the other end. Hamburg have scored six goals in seven Bundesliga games and conceded 16, and most of that damage was done in the opening three defeats, including a 5-0 loss at Leipzig.
Saturday’s 1-0 at Paderborn ended a three-game league winning run. It was the first time since the opening weeks that they’d failed to score in the league.
The squad is short. Mario Vuskovic is suspended, Nicolai Remberg is out until late June 2027 with a cruciate ligament injury, and Patson Daka is doubtful with a thigh problem.
Polzin has set Hamburg up in a 3-5-2, with three centre-backs and two wing-backs. At home that shape has conceded once in the three wins over Koln, Copenhagen and Stuttgart.

Eintracht Frankfurt: one point from their last two away days and six conceded in Leipzig
Frankfurt’s last five matches: 0-1 at Dortmund, 1-0 against Koln, 0-6 at Leipzig, 4-0 against Eintracht Braunschweig and 2-2 against Freiburg. Before that they won 3-1 at Mainz on 12 September.
That win at Mainz is their last on the road. Since then they’ve lost both away league games, scoring none and conceding seven.
At Dortmund they lined up in a 4-4-2, with Atubolu in goal behind Baum, Brassier, Koch and Nnamdi Collins. Collins and Fares Chaibi were both booked for fouls in the second half, and Frankfurt held out until the 80th minute.
Jessic Ngankam is out with a thigh injury and Malik Pimpong is also injured. Doan and Burkardt started at Dortmund and should carry most of the attacking load again in Hamburg.
Frankfurt have scored ten league goals in seven matches and conceded 17, a goal difference of minus seven. Across the clubs’ longer history they lead the head-to-head with eight wins to Hamburg’s four, with six draws.
Probable lineup Hamburger SV: Not announced at time of publication
Probable lineup Eintracht Frankfurt: Atubolu; Baum, Brassier, Koch, Collins; Chaibi, Onyedika, Aseko Nkili, Doan; Ebnoutalib, Burkardt

Our prediction: Hamburger SV or draw (double chance) @ 1.60
Hamburg have won their last three home games and haven’t lost to Frankfurt in two meetings since promotion. Frankfurt have lost both of their away league games since mid-September without scoring, and they’ve conceded 17 times in seven Bundesliga matches.
Hamburg’s own attack is the honest worry, with six league goals all season, and the absences of Vuskovic and Remberg leave Polzin with fewer options. That’s why I’d cover the draw rather than take Hamburg at 2.80.
The double chance at 1.60 covers 90 minutes, before any extra time. Frankfurt’s away form doesn’t justify being favourites at the Volksparkstadion, and Hamburg or the draw is the bet.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
