SC Freiburg vs Union Berlin: third hosts 16th, and five meetings without a Freiburg win Bundesliga

Freiburg are third in the Bundesliga with 16 points from eight games. Union Berlin are 16th with seven, and yet Freiburg haven’t beaten them in any of the last five meetings: two defeats at the Europa-Park Stadion, one in Berlin and two goalless draws.

Those results frame Sunday 8 November, 16:30 UK time, when the sides meet at the Europa-Park Stadion in round nine. Union have won nine of the 17 meetings between the clubs in all competitions, Freiburg three, with five draws.

The table says something very different about this season. Freiburg have five wins, a draw and two defeats, with 18 goals scored and 10 conceded. Union have one win, four draws and three defeats, and their one league win came against Elversberg on 10 October.

The complication is Thursday. Freiburg play Trabzonspor in the Conference League at 17:45 UK time, then have to get home from Turkey for a Sunday game. Union last played on 1 November and have no European fixture, and that difference shapes the selection on one side and not the other.

Union’s record in this fixture is a real point in their favour, and I wouldn’t dismiss it. It just has to be set against a side that has scored three goals in five games and hasn’t won in the league for nearly a month.

SC Freiburg: 18 league goals, and a rotation problem after Trabzon SC Freiburg

Freiburg won 2-1 at Augsburg on 31 October, which steadied them after defeats to Bayern Munich (3-1) and at Bayer Leverkusen (2-1). Before those two they’d beaten Schalke 2-1 on 11 October and drawn 2-2 at Eintracht Frankfurt on 19 September.

Goals have come in most of their games, at both ends. All five of a recent five-match run went over 2.5 goals, with both teams scoring in four of them, and Freiburg scored seven and conceded 11 in that stretch.

The home numbers lean the same way. Across their last five home games they’ve won three and lost two, scoring 12 and conceding eight, and they’ve let in at least one in four of those five.

Europe is where the strain shows. Freiburg lost 3-0 at Monaco in the Conference League, and Thursday’s opponents have won their last five home matches without conceding. Across their last six matches the coaching staff have kept only 44% of the starting side from game to game, so more changes are likely on Sunday.

Treu (ankle) and Yilmaz (lacking match fitness) are out, and Makengo (muscle) and Scherhant (foot) are doubts, which matters because both appear in the projected side. Matthias Ginter and Philipp Lienhart are expected at centre-back, and Maximilian Eggestein, who has started all six recorded meetings with Union, should anchor the midfield.

Union Berlin: three goals in five games and four draws from eight Union Berlin

Union’s last five league results read 7-0 defeat at Bayern on 18 September, 1-0 win over Elversberg, 0-0 with Dortmund, 1-1 at Augsburg and 1-1 at home to Koln on 1 November. Take away the Bayern game and they’ve conceded twice in four matches.

That’s why they’re hard to dismiss, and also why they sit 16th. Three goals scored in five games is a very low return, and four draws from eight have left them on seven points.

Away from home the record is poor. A sample of five away games shows one win, one draw and three defeats, with five scored and 16 conceded, though the seven at Bayern accounts for a large part of that.

The squad is also short. Skov, Nsoki, Markgraf and Ilic are all out, and Juranovic is a doubt with an Achilles problem. The selection hasn’t changed much in response, with 78% of the side kept from game to game and the same eleven named for the last two matches.

Rani Khedira has started the last four meetings with Freiburg and is projected alongside Schafer in midfield, with Skarke leading the attack. Union’s three recent wins over Freiburg were built on small margins: 1-0 in March, 2-1 in March 2025 and 2-1 in May 2024.

Probable lineup SC Freiburg: Backhaus; Kubler, Ginter, Lienhart, Makengo; Eggestein, Engelhardt; Beste, Suzuki, Scherhant; Matanovic
Probable lineup Union Berlin: Ronnow; Haberer, Van Den Bosch, Querfeld, Rothe; Schafer, Khedira; Jeong, Aebischer, Burcu; Skarke

Our prediction: SC Freiburg to win at 1.52

Freiburg are 1.52, the draw 4.60 and Union 5.75. The head-to-head is the obvious reason to hesitate, along with a Thursday night in Turkey and the changes that will follow it.

I’m backing the hosts anyway because the two sides are nine points apart after eight games and Union have scored three in five. Freiburg scored 12 in their last five home games, and Union’s sample of five away games shows 16 conceded.

A draw is the likeliest way this goes wrong, given Union’s four from eight. Even so, 18 league goals in eight games against three in Union’s last five is a wide enough gap for me to take the home win.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
