Two wins out of three, and yet
The raw numbers from the French clubs on Champions League opening night do not look alarming. PSG hammered Bratislava 6-1, Lens went to Prague and beat Slavia 3-2, and only LOSC fell at home to Real Betis 2-3.
The table tells a bleaker story. As of 11 September, France sits 14th in the UEFA country rankings for the 2026/27 season with 3,642 points, wedged between Greece and Latvia. Germany, with a similar profile, is seventh on 4,571.
The real damage came earlier. Lyon’s playoff exit against Fenerbahce cost France a 0.87-point bonus in the national coefficient. One fewer club in the group stage, and the whole average takes a hit.

Portugal has cut the gap by 6.5 points
The main rival is moving fast. Portugal sit third in this season’s standings on 4,700 points, with all five of their clubs still alive.
The number that stings is the five-year ranking, the one that decides how many European places a country gets. Before this campaign kicked off, France held a 10,332-point lead over Portugal. That gap is now 3,774 points, with the French on 68,724 and the Portuguese on 64,950.
The reason is simple. The automatic removal of the 2021-2022 season, hugely productive for French clubs, wiped out a healthy cushion. Margin for error: almost none.
Bollaert hosts the one game that can swing this
There is still reason for hope. On the opening matchday, France even edged Portugal on the pitch: Sporting beat Galatasaray 3-1, but Porto were beaten at home 0-2 by Manchester City and a brace from Erling Haaland.
Lyon, Rennes, Marseille and Monaco entering the Europa League and Conference League will be crucial. Portugal, meanwhile, lean on Benfica, Sporting Braga and União Torreense, the second-tier side who qualified through the domestic cup.
One date already stands out. On matchday two of the Champions League, Lens host Sporting at Bollaert. It is the only direct meeting between a French club and a Portuguese club across this season’s entire league phase, Champions League, Europa League and Conference League combined.
