NFL news: Jason Sanders named New York Jets starting kicker for Week 1

NFL: Jets hand the Week 1 kicking job to Sanders

Sanders gets the first swing

The New York Jets will start Jason Sanders at kicker on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans in Nashville. Head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed the call today.

New York will elevate Sanders from the practice squad for the opener while keeping Blake Grupe on the 53-man roster. Two kickers, one job, and a coach who refuses to call it closed.

“Jason will kick this week. He’s had most of the reps,” Glenn said.

Glenn keeps the door open

He then spent the rest of the answer defending the man who lost.

“The thing is, Grupe, I want to make sure he gets a solid chance. He just got here last week. He hasn’t had a lot of chances,” Glenn said. “I want to make sure that I give him the proper chance for the competition. So, I want to let this thing play out.”

Grupe, 27, arrived off waivers from Indianapolis on Aug. 31. He has converted 81.9 percent of his field goals, 86 of 105, and 96 of 98 extra points across 50 games with New Orleans and the Colts.

A year away from the field

Sanders is the more decorated of the two and the rustier. He did not appear in a single game last season. Before that he spent seven years with Miami, the AFC East rival the Jets face twice a year, and made 187 of 221 field goals at 84.6 percent along with 259 of 268 extra points.

Those numbers earned him the reps in camp. Sunday in Nashville decides whether they earn him Week 2.
