Fortuna Sittard vs Ajax: just three points separate them, with the promoted side sitting higher in the table 
Fortuna Sittard sit sixth in the Eredivisie with 10 points from five games. Ajax are eighth with seven points from four matches.
The Amsterdam club are already eight points behind leaders AZ Alkmaar and six adrift of PSV. At this stage of the season, that gap is starting to bite in the title race.
The Limburg side, meanwhile, have won three of their last four league matches. They beat Groningen 3-2 and ADO Den Haag 3-2, among others.
Kick-off is set for Saturday 12 September at 20:00 Paris time at the Fortuna Sittard Stadion. Matchday six in the Eredivisie pits two teams heading in very different directions.
Danny Buijs has built Fortuna’s start on a compact unit that can strike quickly. Michel, by contrast, has to claw back ground with a run of fixtures that is leaving him little room for error.
The Fortuna Sittard Stadion has not seen Ajax lose there for 26 years. That is the stat the visitors will point to as they try to brush off their dip.
Ajax come in off a 3-1 defeat to PSV that ended a 14-match unbeaten run in all competitions. That stretch included five games without defeat against their Eindhoven rivals.
Still, the head-to-head record is brutal. Fortuna Sittard have not beaten Ajax since a 2-0 win in 2000, a run of 19 meetings without a victory.
The last four clashes have ended with a combined 14-2 in Ajax’s favour. The numbers tell one story, but recent form tells another.
Fortuna Sittard, an attack that keeps delivering 
Fortuna Sittard have scored in four of their five Eredivisie matches. The only blank came at home against AZ Alkmaar in a 2-0 defeat.
That one needs a bit of context: Ole Romeny was sent off after five minutes. The Limburg side spent more than 80 minutes down to 10 men.
This season, Danny Buijs’s team have scored three goals in a match on three separate occasions. They also held PSV to a 2-2 draw on the opening day.
That draw with PSV remains the benchmark for the campaign. It showed they can go toe to toe with a side from the top end of the table.
10 points from five matches leave them sixth, ahead of an Ajax side who still have a game in hand. The table already says plenty about both starts.
Mohamed Ihattaren sums up that growing attacking threat. The midfielder scored twice and added an assist in the 3-2 win at ADO Den Haag.
Lequincio Zeefuik also scored in that game, his third goal of the season. He now has four direct goal contributions since the start of the campaign.
The defensive options are still thin. Kristoffer Peterson, Ivan Marquez, Sven Simons, who has a hamstring issue, and Siebe Wylin are out, while Romeny returns from a two-match ban.

Ajax, a defence that has looked anything but watertight this season 
Ajax have shipped goals in almost every recent outing. Two against Heerenveen, three against PSV, two at Shelbourne, two at Sion, then three more in the return leg against the Swiss side.
That lack of balance was hidden for 14 matches by a strong attacking output. The 5-3 win over Sion and the 4-0 victory at Telstar showed the scale of it.
The defeat in the Topper changed the mood. Peter Bosz and PSV claimed their first win over Ajax since 2023, and the Amsterdam side’s run fell apart in one night.
Tolu Arokodare remains Michel’s main attacking threat. The striker has scored in four straight matches and now has five goals in official competition, six in all.
Oscar Gloukh, Steven Berghuis and Julian Brandt, though, have cooled off statistically. Even so, they can still turn a game in an instant.
The squad is missing Daley Blind, Rayane Bounida and Simon Adingra. Aaron Bouwman is also out after suffering a lung bruise against PSV, which should open the door for Thilo Kehrer at centre-back.
The league deficit makes Ajax’s season harder to read. Eight behind AZ Alkmaar and six behind PSV, it is an unusually heavy burden for the club with 36 domestic titles.
There is no real breathing space in the schedule to put things right. Michel has to get his team moving again without Blind or Bounida, two experienced figures he has leaned on.

Fortuna Sittard have found the net in four of their five league games, and the only exception came after that fifth-minute red card. Ihattaren and Zeefuik have both been piling up decisive contributions over the past three weeks.
At the other end, Ajax have conceded at least twice in five of their last six matches in all competitions, including against Shelbourne and Sion. The Amsterdam back line is missing Bouwman and Blind, which hardly helps.
Going forward, Arokodare has scored in four matches on the spin and Ajax have not failed to score once this season. Both teams should get on the scoresheet on Saturday night.
