Bordeaux’s drop to R1 confirmed, with liquidation now looming
There is no suspense left now. The DNCG appeals commission confirmed on Wednesday that Girondins de Bordeaux have been dropped into Regional 1. Unable to secure the money needed to save their place in the national leagues, the club keeps sliding. Even worse, the threat of judicial liquidation now hangs over the Bordeaux institution.

Already relegated on sporting grounds to National 2 in recent years, Bordeaux were still hoping to keep hold of a spot in the national divisions. The DNCG was not persuaded by the financial guarantees put forward in the appeal.
The punishment means another fall for a club that was still in Ligue 1 in 2022. The Girondins will now start again in R1, a regional level a long way from the status this club once carried for most of its history.
Beyond the sporting blow, this decision is expected to trigger a wave of departures among players, staff and partners still tied to the club. The current structure no longer looks fit for a sixth-tier side.

The threat of liquidation
Relegation may not be the final bad news of Bordeaux’s summer. A hearing is due shortly at the commercial court to consider opening liquidation proceedings. A decision could come before the end of the month.
If that happens, the Girondins de Bordeaux association would remain the sole holder of the club’s registration number. It would also have to absorb several liabilities, including about 4.5 million euros linked to international transfers and 500,000 euros in training compensation.
So Bordeaux’s future is now being decided far from the pitch. After the drop to R1 was confirmed, the priority has become the survival of a six-time French champion.
