Marseille avoid expulsion, but UEFA are leaving them little room to breathe
In Marseille, there is real relief, even if this is far from sorted. Under threat of a much heavier punishment, OM have ultimately been allowed to play in next season’s Europa League. UEFA has opted not to kick the club out immediately, despite their failure to meet the targets set out in the agreement signed four years ago.
European financial officials judged that Marseille’s accounts were still outside the permitted limits. But the problems facing French football, with TV income sliding, weighed on their decision. Enough, then, for Marseille to be granted a stay of execution.
One season to get the books back in order
This reprieve is not a clean slate. Marseille must present a healthier financial picture by the end of the 2026-2027 season. If they do not, any future European qualification earned on the pitch will be automatically wiped out. UEFA have also imposed restrictions on registering new players for their competitions. A first fine of 6 million euros comes with those measures.
The bad news does not end there. Marseille’s squad costs were also deemed too high. In 2025, they went beyond the limit allowed under the financial rules, which brings another 4 million euros in sanctions.

A transfer window that will come with strings attached
In all, the bill stands at 10 million euros. Hardly ideal for Marseille’s hierarchy as they head into the summer.
Pablo Longoria and his staff now have to balance sporting ambition with financial reality. UEFA’s message this time is plain: one more slip could hurt a lot more than a fine.
Marseille will be in the Europa League next season and will hope for a long, decent run in Europe.
