Feyenoord vs Como: the Eredivisie leaders against Serie A’s newest European force
Feyenoord went top of the Eredivisie on Saturday. Four weeks earlier, they’d been taken apart 5-1 in Barcelona. Those two results sit side by side in Rotterdam right now, and Wednesday’s visit of Como will tell us which one says more about this side.
Kick-off at De Kuip is set for 18:45 Paris time on Wednesday 14 October, the early slot on the second night of matchday two in the Champions League league phase. It’s a fixture without history: the two clubs have never met in competitive football.
Como arrive with three points already banked. Cesc Fabregas’s side opened their European campaign with a 4-1 win over RB Leipzig at the Sinigaglia, and it wasn’t a fluke built on one lucky afternoon. Martin Baturina scored, assisted and created three chances in 66 minutes. Anastasios Douvikas and Assane Diao both found the net too.
Feyenoord, on the other hand, are still waiting for their first point. The defeat in Barcelona left them with a goal difference of -4 after one game, which is about as heavy a start as you can make. The domestic picture is different, though: 20 points from eight league games and a 2-0 win over AZ that took them a point clear of PSV.
So which Feyenoord turns up? That’s the honest question here. Strong at home in the league, exposed at the top level of Europe. The bookmakers have made their call, pricing Como as favourites at around 1.88 even on the road, and it’s worth unpacking why.
One more detail matters. Como’s weekend assignment was a home meeting with Serie A leaders Roma, just three days before this trip. Feyenoord played on Saturday too. Neither side gets an easy week, and both coaches will have to manage legs.
Feyenoord: top of the Eredivisie, but still haunted by that night in Barcelona
Start with the good news. Feyenoord beat AZ 2-0 at De Kuip on Saturday, with Nacho Ferri scoring in the 13th minute and Javi López adding the second just before the hour. It moved them onto 20 points from eight games, top of the table.
The way they won it was interesting. AZ had 57% of the ball and managed only two shots on target. Feyenoord created six big chances. That’s a side comfortable without possession, happy to let opponents have it and then strike quickly. They also had a bit of luck: a penalty given to AZ for contact on goalkeeper Tjark Ernst was overturned after a VAR review.
Europe’s been a different story. Barcelona beat them 5-1 on 9 September, and the scoreline doesn’t flatter the hosts. Sem Steijn’s goal off the bench, scored within 18 minutes of coming on from his only shot of the game, was the one bright spot.
The worry for Wednesday is that the game-plan that works against AZ, sit off and break, can leave too much space against technical sides. Barcelona found that space over and over. Como’s midfield isn’t Barcelona’s, but it’s built to find the same pockets.
Gjivai Zechiël, Givairo Read, Jeremiah St. Juste and Mika Mármol all played the full 90 in Catalonia, and they’ll likely start again. Nobody’s flagged a fresh injury. That’s useful. It also means the same back line that shipped five is the one Como will be attacking.
De Kuip will help, no doubt about it. It’s one of Europe’s most intimidating grounds when it’s full. But atmosphere doesn’t defend a cut-back. Feyenoord have to prove they can stay compact against a side that passes through lines rather than around them.

Como: four goals against Leipzig and a midfield that runs through Baturina
A 4-1 win over RB Leipzig on your Champions League debut night tells you plenty. Como didn’t hang on. They dominated, and the scoresheet was spread around: Baturina, Douvikas, Diao.
Baturina’s the one to watch. A goal, an assist and three chances created in 66 minutes is the kind of output that makes a coach’s job easy. He’s the link between Fabregas’s patient build-up and the runners ahead of him, and Feyenoord’s midfield pair will spend most of the evening trying to find him.
Douvikas, meanwhile, is a striker who doesn’t need much. He scored from his only shot on target against Leipzig, in 65 minutes. Give him one clean look and the odds are he takes it.
The domestic form isn’t spotless. Como went into the weekend eighth in Serie A on 10 points from five games, and their last league outing before the Roma match was a 2-0 defeat at Frosinone that ended a nine-game unbeaten run. That’s a reminder: this side can be frustrated by teams who press and get bodies forward quickly.
Away from home, that’s a fair concern. Still, the quality gap in midfield is real. Nicolás Paz adds another creator alongside Baturina, and the full-backs, Alex Valle and Yan Couto, both like to push on.
The question isn’t whether Como can create chances in Rotterdam. They will. It’s whether they can stay solid when Feyenoord inevitably get their counter-attacking moments. Against AZ, Feyenoord turned limited possession into six big chances. That’s the threat Como need to respect.
Probable lineup Feyenoord: Ernst; Read, St. Juste, Watanabe, Mármol; Zechiël, Vanhoutte; Valente, Javi López, Hadj Moussa; Nacho Ferri
Probable lineup Como: Butez; Yan Couto, Jacobo Ramón, Chalobah, Alex Valle; Da Cunha, Luis Milla; Diao, Baturina, Paz; Douvikas
Free Champions League Prediction: Feyenoord vs Como
Our prediction: Como to win (odds around 1.88)
The case for Como starts in midfield. Baturina and Paz give them two players who can unlock a defence that conceded five in its only Champions League outing, and Douvikas has shown he doesn’t waste chances. Feyenoord’s domestic form is excellent, but they’ve built it on counter-attacks against opponents who keep the ball without hurting them. Como keep the ball and hurt you.
There’s a real risk here and we won’t pretend otherwise. Feyenoord at De Kuip, top of their league, with Ferri and Javi López in form, can score against anyone. A 2-1 or 3-2 type of game is entirely possible. But at 1.88, the price reflects a side that’s simply better on the ball, already proven at this level with a four-goal win over a Bundesliga club.
Expect goals at both ends. Expect Feyenoord to have their moments. And expect Como’s extra quality between the lines to settle it, probably by a single goal.
in your pocket.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal — and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses — that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation — that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
