Will FC Utrecht finally break the curse? The home side have not beaten PSV Eindhoven since October 2019, when they won 3-0 at home.
That feels like another age. The winless run now stands at 12 straight meetings for Utrecht in this fixture.
Opposite paths at the Galgenwaard
Kick-off is set for Sunday at 12:15 at Stadion Galgenwaard in round 4 of the Eredivisie.
On paper, it looks like a top-end clash. In reality, it pits two teams heading in very different directions this early in the season. In front of their own fans, Utrecht will need something close to a minor miracle if they are to stop Eindhoven’s lot.
Utrecht are still waiting for their first league win after three rounds and come into this one off a frustrating 3-3 draw at Sparta Rotterdam. Anthony Correia, who took over after Ron Jans stepped down, is still chasing his first official victory.
PSV, by contrast, have hit their stride again after an opening draw against Fortuna Sittard. Two wins have followed, including a 5-1 thumping of Groningen that put the champions back on track.
One stat does at least put a small dent in PSV’s grip on this rivalry: they have conceded in 10 of the last 12 meetings. Utrecht nearly always score against them, even if it hasn’t exactly brought much joy lately.
Last season produced two thriller, won 2-1 and 4-3 by the club with 27 national titles. In the second, PSV came back from 0-2 down before Couhaib Driouech grabbed the winner in the 94th minute.
PSV are chasing a fourth straight Eredivisie title and cannot afford slip-ups on trips like this. Utrecht, meanwhile, are already under pressure to avoid falling behind in August.
Last season’s two meetings produced 10 goals in total. This fixture rarely disappoints when it comes to action.

Utrecht’s start to the season is simple enough: two defeats and a draw. A 1-2 loss at Groningen, a 1-4 home battering by AZ Alkmaar, then that 3-3 in Rotterdam.
The Sparta match summed up the problem. Utrecht led three times and were pulled back each time, before Nick Verschuren levelled it in the 96th minute.
Ten goals conceded in three league games is the tax for a team that cannot protect a lead. And the fixture list could hardly have been harsher, with the champions next up.
The injury list is not helping Correia either. Victor Jensen, Noah Ohio, Alonzo Engwanda, Miliano Jonathans and Oualid Agougil are all out.
Artem Stepanov, taken off in the 73rd minute against Sparta, is still a doubt, along with Ferdinand Pohl, who is carrying a calf issue, and Joris van Overeem. Losing your lead striker before a match like this would hurt badly.
Adrian Blake is the only player in the squad with more than one goal after three rounds. That is a thin attacking return against the best side in the country.
The opening run did Utrecht no favours either, with AZ Alkmaar and PSV arriving inside three matches. Plenty of mid-table Dutch sides would have struggled with that start.
The one bright spot is up front, because Utrecht have scored in all three league games. The issue is not creating chances. It is hanging on when they do.

PSV Eindhoven: the goals have returned after a shaky start 
PSV dropped points straight away with a 2-2 draw against Fortuna Sittard. Since then, Peter Bosz’s side have rattled off a 2-1 win at Excelsior and a 5-1 demolition of Groningen.
That last result matters most. Groningen arrived in Eindhoven on a winning run and left in pieces.
The summer window had threatened to upset the balance of the squad, with Ismael Saibari leaving for Bayern Munich and Joey Veerman heading to Borussia Dortmund. Bosz has had to rebuild the midfield without his two main outlets.
Ivan Perisic and Ricardo Pepi have been the standout men so far, and they are the only PSV players with more than one goal. Their link-up gives the champions a cutting edge that most Dutch defences struggle to handle.
Couhaib Driouech, who haunted Utrecht last season, has since moved to Celta Vigo after PSV’s last outing. Bosz also has to do without Alassane Plea and Jerdy Schouten, who has a knee issue.
A win on Sunday could be enough to send PSV to the top of the table, if AZ Alkmaar drop points. That adds a little extra spice, as if they needed it.
The 0-4 defeat to AZ Alkmaar before the league campaign began remains the only real warning sign in PSV’s season so far. Since then, Bosz has not tasted defeat.
Ruben van Bommel adds more thrust in attack alongside Perisic and Pepi, making a front line that has already torn Groningen apart. It is the strongest part of this team.

Utrecht have scored in all three league games but have shipped 10 goals, which rules out any real chance of a tight, cagey contest. On the other side, that 5-1 against Groningen was a reminder of what Perisic and Pepi can do to a shaky back line.
