FC Twente vs Ajax: five away wins from five meet a nine-goal Twente Eredivisie

Twente won 9-0 at Excelsior on Sunday. A week earlier they’d beaten AZ 2-0 on AZ’s own ground, and those two results have put them fourth in the Eredivisie on 23 points, one behind this weekend’s visitors.

Ajax come to De Grolsch Veste on Sunday 8 November, 13:30 UK time, second on 24 points. Their last five away league games have brought five wins, 18 goals scored and four conceded.

Only two points cover the top four. Feyenoord lead on 25 without a league defeat, Ajax have 24, and PSV and Twente have 23 each, so whoever wins here could finish the weekend top if Feyenoord slip at Heerenveen earlier in the day.

Both clubs also have a Conference League game on Thursday, Twente at home to Pafos and Ajax away at Midtjylland. Ajax have the trip to Denmark to recover from, and a 13:30 start on Sunday doesn’t give anyone much time.

The bookmakers lean to the home side, with Twente at 2.25 and Ajax at 2.90. I think that’s the wrong way round, and the away record is the reason.

FC Twente: 10 conceded in 11 games, but a home defeat to Utrecht still on the record FC Twente

Ten goals conceded in 11 league games is the best figure among the division’s top six. Feyenoord have let in 12, while Ajax, PSV and AZ have each let in 13.

The 28 goals scored need a little care. Nine of them came in one afternoon at Excelsior, which leaves 19 from the other ten matches, and that’s a more modest return than the headline suggests.

Their last five home league games read four wins and one defeat, with 10 scored and five conceded. The defeat was the one I’d worry about: Utrecht won 2-1 in Enschede on 18 October.

They do have a recent big-game result to lean on. PSV lost 3-2 here on 20 September, and Twente also won 2-1 at Ajax on 4 April, the last league meeting between these clubs.

Selection looks stable. Twente have kept 85% of their starting side over the last six matches, and I’d expect little change unless Thursday costs them someone.

Lemkin is out with a muscle injury and van Rooij is a doubt. Van Rooij has started all four recorded meetings with Ajax, so his fitness is the team news I’d check first on Sunday morning.

Ajax: 18 away goals in five, with Dolberg and Henrique missing Ajax

Ajax have lost once in 11 league games. Seven wins and three draws have brought 30 goals, and the away form is carrying most of that.

Their last two trips ended 2-1 at Sparta on 25 October and 5-2 at Groningen on 18 October. They scored at least twice in both, and the five at Groningen is their biggest total in that away run.

Home form has been the shakier half. NEC drew 1-1 in Amsterdam on 10 October and Excelsior took a 2-2 on 19 September, before a 1-0 win over AZ on 31 October steadied things.

The absences are heavier than Twente’s. Dolberg has a knee injury, Henrique a thigh problem, Gaaei is also out, Adingra lacks match fitness and Berghuis is a doubt.

That’s why the rotation figure matters. Ajax have kept 65% of their side over the last six matches, a lower number than Twente’s, and they’ve won plenty while changing it.

The head-to-head offers no warning about this ground. Ajax won 3-2 here on 26 October 2025 and drew 2-2 on 10 November 2024, and they lead the 32 recorded meetings by 16 wins to seven.

Our prediction: Ajax to win at odds of 2.90

I’d back Ajax at 2.90. Five away wins from five and 18 goals on the road are the strongest numbers in this fixture, and Twente’s one home defeat came against Utrecht, a side below Ajax in the table.

Twente’s defence is the honest case against me, and so is the 2-1 win in Amsterdam in April. I still don’t think one 9-0 at Excelsior should move the price this far towards the home side.

Ajax have won or drawn on each of their last two visits here, and 2.90 pays for a result they’ve produced on every away day of the last five. A 2-1 away win is the score I’d expect.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
