Three runs from one swing
Los Angeles was trailing 4-2 late in the seventh inning. Tommy Edman stepped in and crushed a three-run home run off reliever Clayton Beeter. The Dodgers beat the Washington Nationals 6-5 at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night.
Edman was batting leadoff in place of Shohei Ohtani. The Japanese star is out with a sore left knee and a bruised right biceps. Teoscar Hernandez filled in as the designated hitter. Both stand-ins did the job: Hernandez got the night started with an RBI single in the first inning.
The Dodgers added another run in the eighth when Alex Call was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. It was their third win in three days without Ohtani, and they are now 85-57.

Glasnow wobbles, Vesia and Scott shut it down
Tyler Glasnow did not have his best stuff. The right-hander gave up four runs over six and one-third innings, his highest total of the season, but did not figure in the decision. Alex Vesia handled one inning and picked up the win, moving to 2-1. Tanner Scott finished off the ninth for his 21st save.
Cade Cavalli nearly stole the night from him. After a rough first inning, the Nationals starter retired 16 of the final 17 batters he faced and allowed just two runs over six innings.
Washington had led for much of the night. CJ Abrams scored in the second on a sacrifice fly by Jose Tena. In the fourth, a single from Keibert Ruiz against his former club brought in Brady House, then Dylan Crews doubled to make it 3-2. Another Crews double chased Glasnow in the seventh, and Daylen Lile followed with an RBI double off Vesia.
A tense finish
Washington would not go quietly. In the ninth, a Lile single brought home another run. The Nationals then had the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on second. Tanner Scott struck out CJ Abrams to end it.
Washington has now lost three straight and sits at 67-77. Los Angeles keeps rolling while it waits on its Japanese superstar.
