Anaheim Ducks vs Florida Panthers: a wounded contender against a young side full of belief NHL

Four goals in Vegas before the Golden Knights even woke up. That is how Anaheim opened its season, and it is why nobody should treat the Ducks as an easy stop on Florida’s West Coast trip.

The Panthers visit Honda Center on Sunday 4 October, with puck drop at 8:00 p.m. ET, 5:00 p.m. local time. In Paris, that means 02:00 on Monday 5 October.

Anaheim sit at 1-0-0 after holding on for a 4-3 win in Vegas. Florida arrive at 1-0-1: an overtime win in Carolina on banner night, then a 4-3 overtime loss in San Jose.

History favours the hosts. The Ducks swept both meetings last season, including a 7-3 win at Honda Center on 4 November.

The injury list favours them too. Aleksander Barkov is on injured reserve with a knee injury, Brad Marchand is out with a lower-body injury, and Gustav Forsling is day-to-day with an upper-body issue.

And still, we side with Florida. The Panthers sit around 1.73 on the moneyline, a price that already accounts for the absences, and the matchup in the later stages of the game tilts towards the more experienced roster.

Anaheim Ducks Analysis Anaheim Ducks

Anaheim’s young core showed up from the first night. Leo Carlsson had a goal and an assist on a single shot in Vegas, and Beckett Sennecke also found the net.

Lukas Dostal made 27 saves on 30 shots, and he needed every one of them. Vegas cut a 4-0 lead to 4-3, and the Ducks spent the final stretch surviving rather than controlling.

That is the warning sign. Dostal finished last season with a .888 save percentage and a 3.10 goals-against average over 56 games, numbers that leave little margin when the pressure builds.

The forward group has plenty of speed. Carlsson centers A.J. Greer and Cutter Gauthier, freshly signed to a six-year deal, while Mikael Granlund and Alex Killorn add experience to the second line.

The blue line is the weaker unit. Jackson Lacombe, Tristan Luneau and Pavel Mintyukov are young, and Drew Helleson and Ian Moore are both on injured reserve, while Troy Terry is out with a hip injury.

Give Anaheim open ice and it will hurt anyone. Make it defend long shifts below the goal line, and the cracks appear fast.

Florida Panthers Analysis Florida Panthers

Florida’s opener in Carolina says a lot about this group. On the night the Hurricanes raised their banner, the Panthers won the shot count 20-15, matched the physical play and took the game in overtime through Forsling.

The San Jose loss was another one-goal game decided after regulation. Two games, three points, and no sign of a team that has lost its competitive edge.

Brady Tkachuk, added in the offseason, gives this lineup another heavy, aggressive presence. He now lines up with Lars Eller and Sam Reinhart, while Matthew Tkachuk, who scored in his last game, works alongside Sam Bennett and Carter Verhaeghe.

Barkov’s absence hurts most through the middle. Bennett, Eller and Anton Lundell must absorb harder minutes, and that is the real cost of the injury list.

The crease has changed too. Sergei Bobrovsky is gone, and Jacob Markstrom and Akira Schmid now form the tandem, both signed for two seasons.

What Florida still has is a style built for this matchup. A heavy forecheck, long possessions in the offensive zone and a veteran core that has played far more pressure hockey than anyone on the Ducks’ roster.

Probable lineup Anaheim Ducks: Dostal; Greer – Carlsson – Gauthier; Sennecke – Granlund – Killorn; Nesterenko – Poehling – Vatrano; Malott – Washe – Caulfield; Lacombe – Luneau; Mintyukov – Mitchell; Hinds – Warren.
Probable lineup Florida Panthers: Schmid or Markstrom (not confirmed); B. Tkachuk – Eller – Reinhart; Verhaeghe – Bennett – M. Tkachuk; Luostarinen – Lundell – Vilmanis; Imama – Lafferty – Hathaway; Forsling (doubtful) – Ekblad; Mikkola – Jones; Kulikov – Gudas.

Free NHL Prediction: Anaheim Ducks vs Florida Panthers

Our prediction: Florida Panthers to win (moneyline) at around 1.73

Anaheim’s opener and last season’s sweep stop this from being a comfortable favourite play. But the Ducks nearly threw away a four-goal lead in Vegas, and Florida is exactly the kind of opponent that applies sustained pressure for 60 minutes, not just in the third period.

The Panthers’ forecheck will test a young Anaheim defense already missing bodies. If Florida controls territory, its depth and its experience take over as the game moves into the later stages, and that is the scenario we expect.

We are not asking for a margin here. Florida to win outright at around 1.73, in a close game, something like 4-3.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation, that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
