Borussia Dortmund vs Real Betis: Pellegrini’s perfect start meets Dortmund’s record against Spanish visitors
Real Betis are one of five clubs still on maximum points in the Champions League, nine from three games, and it’s the first time they’ve won three successive matches in the competition. Wednesday is their first Champions League game against German opposition.
Kick-off at Signal Iduna Park is Wednesday 4 November at 20:00 UK time. It’s the first UEFA meeting between Borussia Dortmund and Betis.
Dortmund’s record against Spanish visitors is the main thing standing in Betis’s way. They’ve won their last four UEFA games against Spanish clubs, all at home: 3-1 against Barcelona, 4-1 against Athletic Club, then 4-0 and 3-2 against Villarreal, the last of those on Matchday 1 this season. Across all their European home games against Spanish sides, they’ve won 13, drawn seven and lost four.
Betis haven’t won any of their last four matches against German clubs. Manuel Pellegrini takes charge of his 70th Champions League match, with 30 wins, 23 draws and 16 defeats from the first 69, and one of those defeats came in Dortmund’s favour: his Malaga side lost to them in the 2012/13 quarter-final.
Both sides have been involved in open games in Europe this autumn. Betis’s three wins finished 3-2, 3-2 and 1-0, and Dortmund’s three matches ended 3-2, 0-1 and 2-1.
Borussia Dortmund: unbeaten in the Bundesliga, but without Emre Can
Niko Kovac’s side went into Saturday’s game at Bayern Munich second in the Bundesliga on 17 points, unbeaten after five wins and two draws, with only four goals conceded.
The margins have been narrow. A 0-0 at Union Berlin on 17 October was followed by a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, settled late by Maximilian Beier, and a 3-2 DFB-Pokal win over Werder Bremen on 27 October.
In Europe, the 1-0 defeat at Bodo/Glimt on 14 October is the only setback. Serhou Guirassy scored both goals in the 2-1 win at Sabah six days later, which takes him to four in the Champions League this season to go with four in the league.
Emre Can is out with a cruciate ligament injury until mid-November, and Konstantelias has the same injury. Kaua Prates and Justin Lerma are missing with muscle problems, while Karetsas returned to partial training on 29 October after a foot and ankle injury. Kovac has won his last four Champions League games against Spanish sides.
Gregor Kobel has kept six clean sheets this season and Beier has two goals and four assists. Dortmund have lost only two of their last 24 home Champions League games, winning 15.

Real Betis: nine points from nine, now without Cucho Hernandez
Betis are fourth in La Liga on 20 points and hosted Malaga in an Andalusian derby on Saturday evening. Their midweek Copa del Rey tie against Navalcarnero was suspended.
League form has been uneven. A 5-2 win over Osasuna on 11 October was followed by a 5-2 defeat by Barcelona on 17 October and a goalless draw at Celta Vigo on 25 October.
In Europe they’ve been efficient. They won 3-2 at Lille, beat Porto 3-2 on 14 October with goals from Abde Ezzalzouli, Cucho Hernandez and an Isco penalty, and edged Feyenoord 1-0 on 21 October.
Cucho Hernandez is now out with a calf injury and Facundo Bernal is suspended until 8 November. Antony is available again after illness and has one goal and two assists in two career games against Dortmund from his Ajax years.
Isco has been directly involved in a goal in each of his last five Champions League appearances, with three goals and two assists in that run. Abde is the club’s top scorer this season, and Betis have lost only two of their last 12 away games in Europe.
Probable lineup Borussia Dortmund: Kobel; Gadou, Anton, Schlotterbeck; Ryerson, Veerman, Nmecha, Svensson; J. Bellingham, Chukwuemeka; Guirassy
Probable lineup Real Betis: Valles; Bellerin, Llorente, Natan, Fran Garcia; Roca, Ceballos; Antony, Isco, Abde; Parrott
Free Champions League Prediction: Borussia Dortmund vs Real Betis
Our prediction: Both teams to score (odds around 1.50)
We expect goals at both ends. Betis have conceded in two of their three Champions League games and Dortmund in all three of theirs, and four of those six matches produced at least three goals.
Picking a winner is harder. Dortmund’s home record against Spanish clubs favours them, and they’re priced around 1.82, but Betis have lost only twice in 12 European away games, and Isco and Abde give them the kind of threat Villarreal carried when they scored twice here on Matchday 1.
Both teams to score is available at around 1.50, and we’d take it over the home win.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
