Corum FK vs Fenerbahce: Emre Belozoglu’s first game, against a promoted side level on points Süper Lig

Fenerbahce named Emre Belozoglu as head coach on Tuesday 3 November, and Sunday’s trip to Corum is the first match he’ll take charge of. The former Fenerbahce captain left Kasimpasa to return for a second spell, replacing Ismail Kartal, who had resigned a week earlier.

Belozoglu didn’t take the Champions League game on Wednesday. Dirk Kuyt stayed on as interim for one more night, and Fenerbahce beat Liverpool 3-2 with goals from Mason Greenwood, Archie Brown and Vedat Muriqi. It was the first good news in a while: the two league games before it were 2-1 defeats to Goztepe and Galatasaray.

Those results explain why a club of Fenerbahce’s size sits sixth in the Süper Lig with 16 points from ten games, nine behind leaders Galatasaray. Their hosts on Sunday are seventh on exactly the same points, which says as much about Corum’s start as it does about Fenerbahce’s.

This is the first competitive meeting between the two clubs. Kick-off at Corum Stadyumu is on Sunday 8 November at 13:00 UK time, and A. B. Taskinsoy is the referee.

What makes the fixture interesting is the goal output on both sides. Fenerbahce have scored 24 league goals, and only Amed SK, with 25, have more. Corum have scored 21, a total only four clubs have beaten, but they’ve also conceded 16, more than any other side in the top eight.

Corum FK: five wins in seven, with Ramirez on six goals Corum FK

Corum didn’t win any of their first three Süper Lig games. Since then they’ve won five of seven, and Burak Yilmaz’s side have shown a useful habit: after each of their last two league defeats, they’ve won the next match.

The latest example came in their most recent league game. After losing to Goztepe, they went to Erzurumspor and won 3-1, which kept them level on points with Fenerbahce and in the top half of the table.

Most of their goals have come away from home. Corum have scored just six of their 21 at Corum Stadyumu, conceding four, which means the defensive weakness has mostly shown up on the road and the attacking threat has too.

Jesus Ramirez is the player to watch, with six league goals, and he’s expected to play alongside Ermin Mahmic. That partnership gives Corum two forwards against a Fenerbahce back line missing several regulars.

Gokhan Sazdagi is suspended after picking up a booking at Erzurumspor, and Emircan Gurluk is out with a muscle injury. Fredy is a doubt with a similar problem, so Yilmaz may have to adjust both his defence and his midfield.

Fenerbahce: 24 league goals, two away defeats in a row and a defence short of four players Fenerbahce

Fenerbahce have won five of their ten league games, and the issue for Belozoglu isn’t scoring. It’s that the goals haven’t turned into consistent results.

Their last two competitive matches on the road were both defeats, and they conceded in each, the most recent the 2-1 loss at Galatasaray. That defeat came the day before Kartal resigned, and it left the club nine points off the top after ten rounds.

The win over Liverpool showed what the attack can do in a big game. Greenwood, Brown and Muriqi all scored, and Muriqi has seven league goals this season, which puts him in a straight contest with Romelu Lukaku for the starting role.

The defence is the concern. Nathan Ake and Marco Asensio are injured, Jayden Oosterwolde is out with an Achilles problem, and Archie Brown is suspended after reaching three yellow cards. Kojo Peprah Oppong is a doubt, so Belozoglu could be picking a back four from very limited options.

Diouf and Yandas are also off the roster. Kante and Guendouzi are expected to start in midfield, with Kahveci, Yuksek and Greenwood behind the striker, so the attacking unit that beat Liverpool should stay largely intact even if the back four doesn’t.

Our prediction: Both teams to score

I’d be cautious about backing Fenerbahce to win straight away under a new coach, away from home, with four defenders missing. Their last two road games both ended in defeat, and in both they conceded.

Corum have scored 21 league goals and Ramirez has six of them. Against a back line without Ake, Oosterwolde or Brown, they should create chances. The low home scoring total, six in four games, is the argument against, but that still works out at a goal and a half per match at Corum Stadyumu.

At the other end, Fenerbahce have the second-best attack in the league and a centre-forward on seven goals. Goals at both ends is the most reliable reading of this match.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
