The Sun were sitting at 10 wins and 32 losses on the morning of September 22. The Tempo had one more win and one fewer defeat.
Those records meet on Thursday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, on the final day of the regular season. Tip-off is set for 01h00 Paris time, overnight Thursday into Friday, with coverage on NBA TV and TSN.
Neither side will make the playoffs, which begin on September 27 with an eight-team bracket. The standings released on September 20 had already closed the door on both of them.
That changes the way to read a late-season game like this. Wider rotations, minutes for younger players, bodies being protected: both coaching staffs can take whatever route they want.
There is still one clear edge, though, and that is home court. Connecticut wraps up its season in front of its own fans, after a campaign in which most of its respectable results came at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Connecticut has built almost everything it has at home 
The Sun are 3-18 away from home, compared with 7-14 in front of their own crowd. Seven of their 10 wins this season have come in Connecticut.
That split has been one of the steadiest parts of their year. On a one-off game like this, it matters more than recent form.
The last few weeks have still been rough. Connecticut took a 103-59 pounding from Atlanta, one of the biggest margins any team has suffered in the league this season.
The Sun then hosted Minnesota Lynx on September 20, a team with the best record in the WNBA and a favorite by more than 17 points. Two days later, they were on the road in Washington against a playoff team.
That schedule explains plenty about the current run. On paper, the Tempo look like the first winnable opponent since play resumed on September 17.
It is also Connecticut’s last chance to add another line to a record that never got above 11 wins. Just numbers, sure, but numbers still matter in a locker room at the end of a season.

Toronto keep taking hits and finish without Mabrey 
The Tempo gave up a 103-85 loss to Indiana on September 18 at Coca-Cola Coliseum. Kelsey Mitchell scored 33 points there, while Caitlin Clark added 28 and 14 assists.
Two days later, in the same building, Toronto fell 106-69 to the New York Liberty. Two home games, two blown defences, and more than 200 points allowed across the pair.
Their away record is even worse: 4-16 on the season. A trip to Connecticut does not exactly scream good news for the Canadian side.
The roster has also thinned out along the way. The club said on September 16 that Marina Mabrey would not play again this season because of a right groin injury, with no surgery planned.
Her absence strips Toronto of one of its main outside scoring threats at the worst point on the calendar. The two heavy losses since then have made it plain how hard that has been to cover.
For a team in its first WNBA season, this road trip is the last stop on a learning curve. There is nothing on the line in the standings, but it comes against a home side with a healthier setup.
