Colorado Avalanche vs Nashville Predators: Lehkonen’s 12 goals, a 6-2 score to settle and a 6-1-1 home record NHL

Artturi Lehkonen leads Colorado with 12 goals in 15 games, three more than Nathan MacKinnon. The Avalanche score 4.21 goals a game, and on Thursday 5 November they host Nashville at Ball Arena, puck drop 9:30pm ET.

The Predators hold a recent result over them. Nashville won 6-2 at Bridgestone Arena on 25 October, two days after Colorado had beaten Tampa Bay 6-3.

Colorado has responded well since that night. The Avalanche beat New Jersey 5-2 on 28 October, added a win over Calgary, and came from 2-0 down to beat Chicago 5-2 on Monday. That’s three straight, and they’re second in the Central Division at 9-5-1 with 19 points.

Nashville’s season has been stranger. The Predators are 5-4-5, sixth in the Central with 15 points, and they’ve gone beyond regulation six times, winning only one of those, a 5-4 shootout decision against Tampa Bay on Saturday.

Both teams play on Tuesday, Colorado in Columbus and Nashville at home to Carolina, so this preview comes before those results. The travel favors the Avalanche, who return home with a day off, while the Predators fly to altitude, and I’d give that real weight for a late start in Denver.

Colorado Avalanche: 4.21 goals a game, and six home wins by three goals or more Colorado Avalanche

All six of Colorado’s home wins this season have come by at least three goals, including 8-4 over Los Angeles, 6-1 over St. Louis, and 6-3 over Tampa Bay. The team has lost once in regulation at Ball Arena, a 6-3 defeat to Toronto on 10 October, and the only other blemish was a shootout loss to Dallas.

MacKinnon sits on 24 points with a team-high 15 assists, and Martin Necas has 18. Lehkonen has 17 points and Cale Makar 15 from the blue line, while Devon Toews added a goal and an assist on Monday to go with his 13 points through 14 games.

The secondary scoring has picked up as well. Nazem Kadri and Jaden Schwartz each scored twice against Chicago, and Kadri now has all four of his goals this season in his last six games. Schwartz has three goals and an assist in his last three.

The defense allows 3.07 goals a game on just under 28 shots, which is the one real weakness in the profile. Josh Manson is out until at least 27 December and Zachary L’Heureux is on injured reserve, but Colorado has allowed six goals in its three-game winning streak, so the recent trend is good.

Mackenzie Blackwood made 21 saves on 23 shots in Chicago for a .913 save percentage. A strong start from him would matter here, because Nashville’s power play is the one area where the Predators can match this team.

Nashville Predators: a 31.9% power play and only one win from six trips past regulation Nashville Predators

That power play is what separates Nashville from most teams around it in the standings. It converts at 31.9%, and that’s a large part of why the Predators have scored at least three goals in four straight games despite averaging 2.93 for the season.

Filip Forsberg has 17 points with five goals, Steven Stamkos has 16 points with eight goals, and Roman Josi has 14 assists from the blue line. That top end is still capable of beating anyone on a given night, as Colorado found out on 25 October.

Juuse Saros is 3-3-4 with a 2.94 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage, which fits a team that’s stayed close in most of its games without winning enough of them. Justus Annunen has two wins but a 3.90 goals-against average, and Nashville has no injuries reported.

The road record is small but telling. Nashville is 1-1-3 away from home: a 5-2 win in Montreal, overtime or shootout losses in Toronto, Ottawa and Pittsburgh, and a 6-0 loss in Boston. That’s five points from five road games, and only the Montreal game was won in regulation.

The defense has allowed 3.14 goals a game, and it recently gave up four in losses to the Islanders and Washington. Tuesday’s game against Carolina, the Metropolitan Division leader, won’t make Thursday any easier for a team about to travel west.

Our prediction: Colorado Avalanche to win (moneyline)

Nashville beat Colorado by four goals 11 days before this game, and a 31.9% power play can punish any lapse in discipline, so we’re not dismissing the Predators. I still back the Avalanche, because that result came in Nashville and this team plays very differently at home.

Colorado has won six of eight at Ball Arena, all six by three or more. It also scores 1.28 goals a game more than Nashville, and the Predators have to find answers for MacKinnon, Lehkonen and Necas with Saros carrying a .902 save percentage.

No price was available at the time of writing, so check the moneyline before placing anything and take it only at 1.45 or higher. Check Tuesday’s results as well, since both teams play again before this one.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

No commitment from us

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
