Club Brugge vs Lens: Tresoldi’s San Siro hat-trick and a Lens defence that keeps leaking
Nicolò Tresoldi scored three times at San Siro on 13 October. The first was a penalty on 30 minutes, the next two came on 63 and 74 minutes, and Romeo Vermant added a fourth on 87 as Club Brugge won 4-3 at Inter.
That result took Brugge to three points and 16th place. They’d lost their opening game 3-2 at home to Aston Villa, so both of their Champions League matches have finished with seven or five goals.
Lens are level on three points, in 19th. They won 3-2 in Prague on matchday one, scoring twice in stoppage time against ten-man Slavia, then lost 2-0 at home to Sporting CP last week.
Both sides won on Saturday. Brugge rested most of their first team and beat KSC Lokeren-Temse 1-0 in the Belgian Cup with a Lemaréchal goal on the stroke of half-time. Lens won 3-1 at Troyes in Ligue 1.
Kick-off is 8pm UK time at the Jan Breydel Stadium. The clubs haven’t met in a competitive match before.
Neither side has kept a clean sheet in the competition yet. The four Champions League games involving these two have produced 19 goals.
Brugge are around 2.10 to win, Lens around 3.25. I don’t have a strong view on the winner. I have a strong one on the goals.
Club Brugge: five wins in a row, 15 goals scored and Tresoldi on four in Europe
Ivan Leko’s side have won their last five, scoring 15 and conceding five. The run includes 3-1 against Antwerp, 3-0 against Genk, 4-1 at La Louvière and the win in Milan, and four of those five games went over 2.5 goals.
Tresoldi has four Champions League goals from ten shots, six of them on target, and two of the four were penalties. Forbs has two assists in the competition and Vetlesen had five goals across the ten games before the Inter trip.
Brugge average 2.35 expected goals per game in the Champions League and have kept 51% of the ball. They create a lot, and they’ve conceded a lot too: six in two European games.
The squad should be close to full strength. Forbs, Sabbe and Vetlesen weren’t in the cup squad on Saturday, which points to rest, not injury. Leko should have all three back on Wednesday, with Vanaken and Potts in a five-man midfield behind Tresoldi. Brandon Mechele broke his nose against Inter but was on the bench at the weekend.
Brugge are second in the Pro League with 21 points. At home they’ve won four of their last five.
Their Champions League games this season have produced 12 goals in two matches. Both sides scored in each of them.

Lens: conceded in eight straight matches, with three players hurt at Troyes
Lens haven’t kept a clean sheet in eight matches. Saturday’s 3-1 win at Troyes followed the pattern: Monfray’s own goal put them ahead on 13 minutes, Nkada equalised on 27, and Edouard and Aguilar scored either side of half-time.
Yannick Cahuzac’s side are seventh in Ligue 1 with 10 points. They beat Lyon 2-1 on 9 October, lost 2-1 at Monaco and drew 2-2 at Le Mans in September, and four of their last five games went over 2.5 goals.
Florian Thauvin is the main source of goals and chances, with five goals this season as of 13 October and 13 chances created in the Champions League alone. Sima and Aguilar have also scored in the competition.
The Troyes win came at a cost. Ganiou took a blow to the knee and was due for tests on Sunday, and Cahuzac said he could at least walk. Todibo went off with cramp and thigh pain, and Aguilar hurt his left ankle, though he said it wasn’t serious.
Lens play a 3-4-2-1 and keep the ball, averaging 59% possession and 1.74 expected goals per game in the Champions League. They lost to Sporting with that approach, failing to score at home.
The Ligue 1 games around that defeat have been open: 2-2 at Le Mans, 2-1 at Monaco, 2-1 against Lyon and 3-1 at Troyes. Each of those four matches had at least three goals in it.
A back three missing Ganiou, with Todibo carrying a problem, would be a weaker unit against a Brugge attack built around Tresoldi. Their last five away games read two wins, a draw and two defeats.
Probable lineup Club Brugge: Sommer; Seys, Mechele, Spileers, Sabbe; Virgili, Vanaken, Potts, Vetlesen, Forbs; Tresoldi
Probable lineup Lens: Risser; Antonio, Baidoo, Ganiou (doubt); Udol, Haidara, Cuisance, Abdulhamid; Kadile, Thauvin; Ivanovic
Free Champions League Prediction: Club Brugge vs Lens
Our prediction: Over 2.5 goals @ 1.54
I’m taking over 2.5 goals at 1.54. Brugge’s two Champions League games have produced 12 goals, and four of their last five matches went over the line. Lens have gone over in four of their last five too.
Lens have conceded in eight straight games and may be without Ganiou, with Todibo and Aguilar also carrying knocks from Troyes. Brugge’s attack is averaging 2.35 expected goals in Europe and has a striker with four goals in two games.
Lens can hurt Brugge as well. Thauvin has created 13 chances in Europe already, and Brugge have conceded six in two European matches. Three goals is a low bar for this pair.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
