Chicago still can’t be trusted at the back

The Sky are still hard to figure out. A 5-5 record over their last 10 games sums it up neatly enough. Chicago can string together decent offensive spells, but they still struggle to keep the level up for 40 minutes.

The numbers tell the story. Chicago average 87.8 points scored this season and 90.1 allowed. Over their last 10, it barely shifts: 88.8 points scored, 90.4 conceded. Even at home, where the offence rises to more than 90 points per game on the season, the defensive issues keep showing up.

That is exactly the kind of thing that can hurt against the Valkyries. In the last meeting between the two teams, on 13 August, Chicago gave up 91 points and lost by 20. Golden State took control early and never really let the Sky back into it.

Golden State have had the upper hand in the head-to-head

The 77-66 loss to Minnesota snapped a four-game winning streak, but it does not undo the strong spell Golden State have been enjoying. The Valkyries have seven wins from their last 10 outings and are allowing just 78.2 points per game across that stretch.

For the season, their defence has been even better, with only 76.6 points conceded a night. The gap with Chicago in that area is huge. The Sky are giving up more than 90 points on average, almost 14 more. Golden State therefore have a much more reliable defensive base to go and get a road win.

The head-to-head record backs that up. Golden State have won four of the first five meetings between the two sides. Better still, the -3.5 line was covered in each of those four wins, with margins of 20, 31, 7 and 5 points. Even in the tightest of those Valkyries wins, the gap was still enough to land the line on offer tonight.

Four wins in five head-to-heads and four handicap covers: Golden State have already found the answers against Chicago. The latest meeting is still fresh, with the Valkyries winning 91-71 on 13 August.

Current form also favours the visitors. Golden State have won seven of their last 10 and are backed by a defence that has been far more consistent than Chicago’s. The Valkyries have allowed just 78.2 points on average over that run, compared with 90.4 for the Sky.

The trip does not put us off either. Golden State average 82.6 points per game away from home this season, and that number climbs to 89 on recent road trips. Against a Chicago defence that gives up plenty, the Valkyries should get enough looks to make the difference.

The -3.5 simply asks for a win by four points or more. That is exactly what Golden State managed in each of their four victories over the Sky. With stronger momentum and a far more dependable defence, we are backing the Valkyries to leave Chicago with another win and cover the handicap.
