Chelsea vs Bournemouth: the league’s most open defence against a side that always finds the net away
Chelsea have conceded in 21 consecutive Premier League matches. That is a club record, well beyond the previous mark of 13 set in 1996, and it is the number that shapes this fixture at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 10 October, kick-off at 16:00 Paris time.
The standings tell a story of two disappointing starts. Chelsea are tenth on 7 points after two wins, one draw and two defeats, while Bournemouth sit 17th on 3 points and remain one of three teams without a league win.
Chelsea games have been the most chaotic in the division. They average 4.40 goals per match, with ten scored and twelve conceded, and no team has let in more.
Bournemouth bring the opposite problem: results that lag behind performances. Marco Rose’s side led late at Manchester City, were 2-0 up against Newcastle before being pegged back, and also surrendered leads against Everton and Brentford.
The head-to-head history points towards balance. Chelsea have won nine of the 18 Premier League meetings, but the last three have all ended level, two of them 2-2.
Bournemouth have won three Premier League games at Stamford Bridge, the last a 1-0 in December 2019. Their record at this ground is thin, but their recent draws against Chelsea are not.
The squad news splits along clear lines. Chelsea expect Cole Palmer and Reece James to be available, while Bournemouth are still without Justin Kluivert.
The market makes Chelsea favourites at around 1.72 to 1.75, with the draw near 4.30 and Bournemouth near 4.00. The goals angle carries far more analytical weight than the result here.
Chelsea: one point from three games and no clean sheet since January
The Xabi Alonso era opened with wins over Fulham and Brighton. Since then, Chelsea have collected a single point from three league matches.
The sequence is worrying in its detail. A 2-1 defeat at Arsenal was followed by a draw against Hull City, then a 3-0 loss at Brentford in the West London derby just before the break.
The defensive record is the core issue. Chelsea’s last Premier League clean sheet came in a 2-0 win over Brentford on 17 January 2026, almost nine months ago.
Stamford Bridge has still offered some protection. Chelsea are unbeaten in three home league matches this season, with two wins and a draw.
The squad news is broadly positive for the hosts. Cole Palmer withdrew from England duty to manage his workload and is expected to start, captain Reece James is set to be fit, and Moises Caicedo has been building back to full fitness.
Jordan Henderson returned to action before the break, adding experience to a midfield that has lacked control. Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emegha are also completing their returns to full fitness.
Alonso’s expected 3-4-2-1 commits wing-backs high up the pitch. That shape produces chances, but it also leaves space behind for a counter-attacking opponent.

Bournemouth: winless in seven league games, yet scoring in six straight away trips
Bournemouth finished sixth last season, their highest Premier League placing. Andoni Iraola then left for Liverpool, and Marco Rose took over a squad playing in Europe for the first time.
The European campaign started well with a win over Real Sociedad in the Europa League. The league form has been far less rewarding: three draws and two defeats, the latest a 1-0 home loss to Liverpool before the break.
The underlying trend is a team that scores but cannot hold on. Bournemouth have found the net in six successive Premier League away matches, and their games this season average 2.80 goals.
The defensive side mirrors Chelsea’s. Bournemouth have not kept a league clean sheet in seven matches, since a 1-0 win at Fulham on 9 May 2026.
The absence list is long, mostly in attack. Justin Kluivert is out with a muscle problem for a couple more weeks, and Amine Adli, Eli Junior Kroupi, Veljko Milosavljevic and Julian Araujo are also unavailable.
Last season’s version was far more solid, with six away league wins and 11 clean sheets overall. This year’s side has kept the attacking reach but lost that defensive edge.
Evanilson leads the line in the expected 4-2-3-1, supported by Rayan and Tavernier. That trio offers enough pace to exploit the gaps Chelsea leave in transition.
Probable lineup Chelsea: Martinez; Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill; James, Caicedo, Lavia, Hato; Palmer, Rogers; Welbeck
Probable lineup Bournemouth: Petrovic; Smith, Hill, Silva, Truffert; Adams, Cook; Tavernier, Scott, Rayan; Evanilson

Our prediction: Both teams to score (odds 1.47)
Chelsea have conceded in 21 straight league games and Bournemouth have scored in six straight away matches. Two streaks of that length colliding make this the most solid angle on the card.
Neither defence has kept a clean sheet this season, and Chelsea’s games average more than four goals. Bournemouth’s habit of leading before collapsing confirms they create enough to score at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea at 1.75 is defensible, but the result is far less predictable than the goals. Both teams to score at 1.47 is our pick.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal — and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses — that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation — that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
