Tennis : Sinner shuts down his 2026 season with a sore knee

The knee ends his season

Jannik Sinner will not return to the tour this year. The world No. 1’s camp announced on Tuesday that the Italian, absent from the ATP circuit since his Wimbledon title in mid-July, is giving up all competition for the rest of 2026. The reason: his right knee, which has never stopped bothering him.

The statement is clear. On the advice of his medical team, Sinner will undergo treatment for inflammation in the knee. Starting it now is meant to give him the time to recover before he begins his preparation for 2027.

An Asian swing already written off

The decision is no surprise. Sinner had already pulled out of Beijing, then Shanghai, because his knee still would not let him return to competition. He had also skipped several late-summer events, including the US Open.

The question has now changed. It is no longer when he will be back this season, but what shape he will be in for 2027. By choosing to heal right away, his team is betting on a full offseason to start again without pain.
