An exit after a poor start to the season
Pierre Mignoni is no longer director of rugby at RC Toulon. The Var club announced his departure on Tuesday “in a context of insufficient sporting results”. Thirteenth and second from bottom in the Top 14, Toulon have won only one match this season, against Vannes, with four defeats.
On Sunday they lost 28-0 at Montpellier. According to the club’s statement, Mignoni told the board himself that he wanted to end his role, and the club accepted.

Azéma in charge until further notice
Toulon turn to a familiar face. Franck Azéma, who returned to the Var this summer, will run the team’s sporting side until further notice. He previously managed the club between 2021 and 2023.
Mignoni explained that he wanted to take full responsibility. He believes a change has become necessary to revive the professional squad and help it find its way back to performing quickly.
A man already worn down last year
At 49, Mignoni had already stepped away for a month in the middle of last season, citing a “decompensation”. He explained then that it was not one particular defeat that tipped him over, but the mental load that had built up until his body gave way.
Toulon finished last season in ninth place. This year the club sits far lower, and the sporting leadership is already changing in October.
