Charlotte Hornets vs Philadelphia 76ers: both teams on a back-to-back, and an Embiid decision still to come NBA

Brandon Miller scored 34 points against Miami on 24 October and 39 against Washington two nights later, a career high built on 15-of-28 shooting with five threes, three steals and two blocks. Charlotte won both games, and those two nights are the reason the Hornets go into Wednesday at 3-1.

They came straight after the worst night of Charlotte’s young season. Atlanta won 128-81 at Spectrum Center on 23 October, the largest win in Hawks franchise history, in the Hornets’ first home game since LaMelo Ball was traded to Minnesota for Naz Reid in June. Miller went 1 for 11 from three that night.

Philadelphia visits on Saturday 31 October, tip-off at 6:00pm ET at Spectrum Center. The 76ers are also 3-1, with wins at the defending champion Knicks (106-100), against Cleveland (114-106 after trailing by 29) and against Milwaukee (127-116). Their one loss came at home to Detroit, 106-93.

Both teams arrive on the second night of a back-to-back. Philadelphia hosts the Knicks at 7:30pm ET on Friday and Charlotte plays in Washington at 7:00pm ET, and both teams also play on Wednesday, so this is a third game in four nights for each of them.

Joel Embiid is the player most affected by that schedule. He’s managing plantar fasciitis in his right foot and, for now, isn’t playing both nights of back-to-backs; he sat the Detroit game on 25 October for that reason. He’s likely to miss either Friday’s game against New York or Saturday’s in Charlotte, and the 76ers hadn’t said which at the time of writing.

Philadelphia won last season’s series 2-1. It took the first game 125-121 at home and the last one 118-114 in Charlotte on 28 March, with a 130-93 Hornets win in between.

Charlotte Hornets: Brandon Miller’s 24.3 points, and 19 turnovers a game Charlotte Hornets

Miller is averaging 24.3 points, but the efficiency hasn’t caught up with the volume. He’s shooting 37.0% from the field and 26.7% from three, and the two big scoring nights came after a 6-point game against Atlanta.

Naz Reid has settled in quickly since the Ball trade. He’s averaging 19.5 points and 9.5 rebounds and shooting 41.2% from three, and he had 20 points and 11 rebounds in the opening win in Brooklyn, then 23 against Miami.

Grayson Allen gives coach Charles Lee a reliable shooter at 16.8 points a game and 48.3% from three. Dennis Schröder is at 14.0 points and 4.5 assists, and scored 25 against Miami, but he’s made 17.6% of his threes.

Charlotte wins the possession game on the glass. The Hornets average 48.0 rebounds and grabbed 20 offensive rebounds against Washington, when Moussa Diabaté had 11 points and 17 rebounds. Diabaté is shooting 68.2% from the field and averaging 9.5 rebounds.

They give a lot of it back, though. Charlotte is turning the ball over 19.0 times a game, scoring 104.0 points on 41.3% shooting and making 30.2% of its threes. Kon Knueppel (left hamstring), Coby White (left calf) and Grant Williams (right hamstring) are all out, and Lee said on 27 October that he had no timeline for any of them.

Philadelphia 76ers: Tyrese Maxey at 28.8 points, and LeBron James at center when Embiid sits Philadelphia 76ers

Tyrese Maxey has scored at least 26 points in all four games: 28 at Madison Square Garden, 32 against Cleveland, 26 against Milwaukee and 29 against Detroit. He’s averaging 28.8 points and 4.8 assists.

The Cleveland game explains why this team is hard to put away. Philadelphia trailed by 29 at home and won 114-106, with Maxey scoring 32, Embiid 24 and Jaylen Brown 21. Two nights later Embiid recorded the tenth triple-double of his career, 28 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, in the win over Milwaukee.

The Detroit game shows what changes without him. With Embiid and VJ Edgecombe both resting, the 76ers started LeBron James at center, Brown went 5 for 20 and Philadelphia scored 93 points in a 13-point loss. James had 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting; Adem Bona came off the bench for 13 rebounds.

Brown is averaging 20.8 points and shooting 42.1% from three in his first season in Philadelphia. James is at 16.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.7 assists and hasn’t scored 20 in a game yet; he sat on 24 October with back trouble. Edgecombe has 12.3 points and 8.0 rebounds a game, including 17 points, 13 rebounds and five threes against Milwaukee.

Philadelphia allows 107.0 points a game and turns the ball over 12.8 times, more than six fewer turnovers per game than Charlotte. Tacko Fall (quad), Jabari Walker (knee) and Dominick Barlow (back) are out.

Probable lineup Charlotte Hornets: Dennis Schröder, Sion James, Brandon Miller, Naz Reid, Moussa Diabaté
Probable lineup Philadelphia 76ers: Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, LeBron James, Joel Embiid (if Embiid sits: Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Dean Wade start, with James at center)

Our prediction: Philadelphia 76ers to win

The honest case against this pick is the Detroit game. If Embiid rests in Charlotte rather than against the Knicks, Philadelphia loses its second-best scorer and its starting center, and it looked very ordinary in that spot last weekend.

I’d still take the 76ers, because Charlotte is missing three rotation players, shoots 41.3% as a team and gives the ball away 19 times a night, and it lost by 47 at home to Atlanta. Philadelphia already has a win at the defending champions, a 29-point comeback against Cleveland and the most consistent scorer on the floor in Maxey.

Both teams are on the same back-to-back, so fatigue doesn’t favor either side. Odds for Saturday weren’t posted at the time of writing; Philadelphia to win is the pick, and it looks even better if Embiid is cleared to play.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
