Golf: Charlie Woods slips near cut at Junior PGA

A slow start in Frisco

Charlie Woods opened the Junior PGA Championship with a stumble. The 17-year-old son of Tiger Woods carded a 3-over 75 on Tuesday at Fields Ranch’s East Course in Frisco, Texas, and sits tied for 53rd, barely inside the cut line.

Woods bogeyed two of his first four holes, clawed back with three birdies, then gave up a double bogey at the par-4 ninth. The top 60 and ties advance after Wednesday’s second round. Right now 71 players hold that position, so his margin is thin.

Seven off the pace

Kailer Stone of Alameda, California leads at 68, seven clear of Woods. Maxwell Milton, Theodore Snyder and Rory Asselta sit one back in a share of second. The second round moves to Fields Ranch’s West Course.

Woods tied for ninth here a year ago, so Tuesday marks a step backward. He needs a clean card on Wednesday to reach the weekend.

Another near miss

The result extends a rough stretch. Last week Woods missed the match-play stage of the U.S. Junior Amateur, losing a playoff after stroke play at Saucon Valley in Pennsylvania.
