A Dutch striker for Portland
Portland is close to landing a proven scorer. The Timbers are finalizing a deal for Dutch forward Vincent Janssen, according to The Athletic, and the 32-year-old would arrive as a free agent after leaving Belgium’s Royal Antwerp this summer.
He would not take up a designated player slot. Instead Janssen slots into the hole left by Felipe Mora, who recently moved to Liga MX side Atletico San Luis. Portland needs goals, and Janssen brings a record of them.

Numbers that travel
Last season he put up 13 goals and seven assists in 40 games across all competitions for Antwerp. This is also a return to North America. Janssen spent 2019 to 2022 with Monterrey in Mexico, where he scored 24 times.
The rest of the CV reads well too. Tottenham in England, Fenerbahce in Turkey, AZ and Almere City back home. For the Netherlands he scored seven goals in 22 caps and featured at the 2022 World Cup.
What is left to settle
The move is not official yet. Portland still has to get the paperwork over the line, but the reporting points to a striker who can lead the line straight away.
