Football: Chicharito joins USL side Atletico Dallas

A record scorer picks Texas

Javier Hernandez has signed with Atletico Dallas, a USL Championship expansion club that will start playing in 2027. The 38-year-old striker agreed to a two-year deal with an option for a third season, and he becomes the first name on the roster of a club that does not yet have a squad.

The number that frames the move: 52 goals in 109 caps for Mexico, still the national team record. Chicharito last pulled on that shirt in 2019, and he spent the 2026 World Cup working as a television analyst rather than chasing the ball.

Not a farewell tour

“I didn’t come here simply to finish my career,” Hernandez said. “I came here to help build the future of football in Dallas.” The club will play its home games at the Cotton Bowl under Peter Luccin, the former Atletico Madrid midfielder appointed as first coach back in February.

The deal still needs league and federation approval. Hernandez has not played a competitive match since turning out for Chivas in November 2025, when he scored three times across all competitions in his final season there.

A well-travelled CV

Dallas becomes the eighth senior club of a career that took in Manchester United, Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham, Sevilla and the LA Galaxy. It also marks his return to American soccer after three years with the Galaxy between 2020 and 2023, this time a division below MLS.
