Celtic vs Dundee United: the league’s best defence against a side scoring in every game Scottish Premiership

Dundee United beat Celtic twice at Tannadice last season, 2-1 and 2-0. At Celtic Park the record runs the other way: Celtic have won the last five home meetings between the clubs.

Wednesday’s game in Glasgow kicks off at 19:45 UK time, and the table makes Celtic clear favourites. Martin O’Neill’s side are top on 27 points from ten games, four ahead of Rangers, with 25 goals scored and six conceded. Both figures are the best in the division.

Dundee United arrive fourth on 15 points and unbeaten in five league games. Jim Goodwin’s side have won three and drawn two in that run, scoring nine goals, and they beat Aberdeen 3-2 at Tannadice on Saturday after being pegged back twice.

The start of United’s season looked very different. Their first five league games brought one win, one draw and three defeats, and they failed to score in three of them. Since then they’ve scored in every league match.

Celtic beat Hibernian 2-1 at Easter Road on Sunday to restore their four-point lead, three days after losing 2-1 at home to Celta Vigo in the Europa League. That was their third straight European defeat, and Celtic sit 35th of 36 in the league phase.

We aren’t looking for an upset in Glasgow. What interests us is the goal at the other end, because Celtic have conceded in each of their last four matches in all competitions and United keep finding the net.

Celtic: nine wins from ten in the league, four games in a row conceding Celtic

Celtic’s only league defeat of the season is the 1-0 loss to Rangers at Celtic Park on 20 September. Since then they’ve won 2-0 at Motherwell and 2-1 at Easter Road, and beaten Hearts 7-1 at home. Their league record at Celtic Park this season is four wins and one defeat, while the 3-0 League Cup loss to Rangers ended their run in that competition.

At Easter Road on Sunday, Owen Elding scored after three minutes from a quick free-kick, and Celtic needed a Jason Kerr own goal two minutes later to level. Camilo Duran won it on 43 minutes, his tenth goal of the season and his sixth in the league.

The goals conceded in recent weeks have come from every direction. Benfica scored four in Lisbon, Hearts got one in the 7-1, Celta Vigo scored twice at Celtic Park and Hibs scored inside three minutes. The league total of six is still the lowest in Scotland, but that run counts for more in our reading than the season-long number.

Yang Hyun-Jun is out with a hamstring injury, and Alistair Johnston lasted under 20 minutes as a substitute on Sunday before going off. O’Neill said Johnston “felt something again” and admitted Celtic were “a wee bit concerned”.

Up front, Kasper Hogh remains the open question. The £11m striker started at Easter Road, missed two chances and came off on 64 minutes. Before Sunday he’d scored once in 13 matches, and that was a hat-trick at Kilmarnock in August.

Dundee United: five unbeaten, nine goals, and the third-best away record in the league Dundee United

United’s five-game run reads 1-1 at home to Falkirk, 3-0 at St Mirren, 1-0 at home to Hibernian, 1-1 at St Johnstone and Saturday’s 3-2 win over Aberdeen. The defeat before it was a 3-0 loss at Motherwell on 2 September.

The Aberdeen game showed both sides of Goodwin’s team. Zidane Iqbal opened the scoring on 14 minutes with a deflected 25-yard shot, his first goal for the club, and Dylan Tait volleyed in from a Kevin Ciubotaru corner on 27. Aberdeen equalised twice, through Nesta Guinness-Walker and Connor Ronan.

Zac Sapsford had a goal ruled out on 62 minutes after a VAR check found Daniel Bennie offside, and then headed the winner from a Tait cross ten minutes later. Tait finished the afternoon with a goal and two assists. “It’s a brilliant header to win it,” Goodwin said afterwards.

Away from Tannadice, United have seven points from five league games, the third-best away return in the division. They’ve won twice and drawn once in their last four on the road, and the 3-0 at St Mirren is the biggest win of their season.

Goodwin has three players missing with longer-term injuries: William Ferry, Mehdi Merghem and Emmanuel Agyei. Bennie, Kai Randall and Sapsford are expected to start in the front three.

Probable lineup Celtic: Johnstone; Donovan, Murray, Scales, Tierney; McGregor, Baur; Duran, Nygren, Osmand; Hogh
Probable lineup Dundee United: Walton; Rawlins, Esselink, Forbes, Ciubotaru; Cameron, Tait, Iqbal; Randall, Sapsford, Bennie

Our prediction: Both teams to score – Yes

Dundee United have scored in five consecutive league games and have the third-best away record in the Premiership. Celtic have conceded in four straight matches in all competitions, and they may be without Johnston and Yang again on Wednesday.

Celtic’s league defence has conceded six in ten games, and United’s recent record at Celtic Park is poor, with five straight defeats there. If Celtic score early and United have to chase, the away side could be left without a clear route back in.

We expect Celtic to win, most likely by a 2-1 or 3-1, with Duran involved again. Backing both teams to score covers that result and reflects a United side that has found the net in every league game since early September.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.

Before placing a bet, simply check that gambling is legal in your country. If it isn’t, that’s your responsibility, not ours.

Responsible gambling

We can’t say it enough: gamble responsibly. If you’re struggling to stay in control, don’t wait to seek help.
