Celtic vs Celta Vigo: two clubs on zero points, one of them just scored seven
Celtic and Celta Vigo have played four Europa League games between them and taken nothing from any of them. Both sit on zero points going into Thursday night at Celtic Park, where kick-off is 8pm UK time.
Celtic lost 3-1 at home to Ferencvaros on the opening night and 4-1 in Lisbon last week, where Benfica’s Jhon Duran scored a hat-trick. That’s three European defeats in a row for Martin O’Neill’s side.
Celta have now lost four European games in a row. This season they lost 1-0 in Cyprus to Omonia and 2-1 at home to Juventus, and Claudio Giraldez admitted after Sunday’s 2-1 win over Alaves that his team are “finding it very difficult to win”.
On Sunday Celtic beat Hearts 7-1 at Celtic Park, with Benjamin Nygren and Osmand scoring twice each, and stayed top of the Scottish Premiership with 24 points from nine games, four clear of Rangers.
There’s no history between the clubs to go on, as this is their first competitive meeting.
The match odds are close: Celtic 2.38, the draw 3.40 and Celta 2.70. O’Neill said after Lisbon that his side “can still do it” with six games left. A third defeat would make that very hard for either club, and I think the home side are better placed to avoid it.
Celtic: seven past Hearts, but three European defeats on the bounce
Celtic have won eight of their nine league games and their goal difference is plus 18. The only league defeat was the 1-0 at home to Rangers on 20 September.
That came a week after a 3-0 League Cup defeat at Ibrox, and between those two games they lost to Ferencvaros. Since then they’ve won 2-0 at Motherwell and 7-1 against Hearts, with the Benfica defeat in the middle.
Nygren and Camilo Duran had four league goals each before Sunday. Nygren scored twice against Hearts and Duran got one and set up two more, so both are in form going into Thursday.
Cameron Carter-Vickers is out with a hamstring injury, with Sunday’s game against Hibs the earliest he can return. Yang Hyun-jun is also missing for a week or two. Tounekti is expected back, and Scales returned against Hearts.
Celtic’s league record would make them clear home favourites against most sides. In Europe they’ve conceded seven goals in two games, four of them in Lisbon.
Osmand came off at half-time on Sunday after his two goals. No reason was given, and his fitness is one to check before kick-off.
The goals markets suggest both sides will find the net. Over 2.5 goals is 1.80 and both teams to score is 1.67, with under 3.5 at 1.40, so the bookmakers see two or three goals as the likeliest outcome.
Across their last ten games Celtic have won five and lost five, with an xG of 1.95 against 1.73 conceded. They create plenty, and the European games have shown how often they give chances back.

Celta Vigo: no Borja Iglesias and one European goal in 180 minutes
Celta’s two European defeats were both by a single goal, 1-0 in Nicosia and 2-1 against Juventus in Vigo. They’ve conceded three times in two games.
Hugo Alvarez scored their only European goal, and in La Liga Jutgla and Pablo Duran had two each before Jutgla scored again against Alaves.
Borja Iglesias won’t be there. He has a soleus injury and isn’t expected back until late November. Starfelt is out until mid-November with a muscle tear, Miguel Roman and El-Abdellaoui have had knee arthroscopies, and Pablo Duran missed the Alaves game after a blow and is a doubt.
Celta beat Racing Santander 5-0 in September, drew 0-0 at Elche on 11 October and then edged Alaves 2-1, with Javi Rodriguez scoring the other goal.
Away from Vigo the run reads draw, draw, draw, defeat, draw. The goalless draw at Elche on 11 October was the latest of those away games.
Giraldez also criticised his team’s energy in the first half on Sunday. Celta play Betis in La Liga on 25 October, and some of his regulars may be rested here.

Our prediction: Celtic draw no bet (1.73)
I’d take Celtic with the draw as cover, at 1.73. They’ve scored nine in their last two league games, they’re at home, and Celta are without their main striker and have drawn most of their recent away games.
Celtic’s European form is the reason I’m not backing them straight up. They lost at home to Ferencvaros, and Carter-Vickers is still missing. Celta’s away record is mostly draws, though, and draw no bet returns the stake if it ends level.
Nygren and Duran have eleven league goals between them, and Celta will be without Starfelt at the back as well as Borja Iglesias up front. Celtic draw no bet at 1.73 is the pick.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
